What software to do basic editing to mpg files

    ...still new to this. I have a number of mpeg 1 video files. I can cut and merge sections of them using TMPGEnc, but is there some software that will do this easier than TMPGEnc and also allow basic effects like fading in and out. If I convert the megs to AVI first (using TMOGEnc or DVD2AVI) to edit them in Premier, the quality is poor. ...would also like to have the same ability for meg2.

    Premiere will import mpeg1, but not mpeg2. I think Ulead has an editor that can handle mpeg2 video. Anyone?
