Hi, brand new to the site but wondering if anyone had some advice. I recently purchased an IBM ThinkPad R50, which came with Windows MovieMaker as part of the software package. However, my laptop version did not come with a video in or firewire port. I do have 2 USB ports. I have an analog Quasar Palmcorder Camcorder. I've checked with Microsoft and googled, which produced a few options, but wanted advice on what people felt was the best (or only, or possible) way to hook my camcorder up to my laptop. Even if I can't, any info would be appreciated. Thanks
There are several capture devices that plug into the USB port, like this one... http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4076812
Thanks, have heard of Dazzle. However, if at all possible I'd like to buy just a cord or card as opposed to software as well. I have heard of something called Belkin USB Videobus II, which plugs into camcorder with analog cables then into computer with USB. Anyone heard of it (problems, etc)?
It's not that easy, you just can't hook up any analog camcorder to a laptop/pc a A/D convertor is what you need, forget capture cards, you need a fast pc to get acceptable results, spend once money on a converter, only FireWire ones, forget the cheap usb ones, you get sync problems, ADVC100 is a good one, for a reasonable price, and 100% quality, there are even better ones, but the price is steep...and are meant for pro's.
Btw. and what do you think the Belkin device is ? it's the same sh*t as the Dazzle, only worse... expect, what you pay for...not more. go for a FireWire device, you even can use that on a laptop, because you get a DV file, wich means that your cpu is not under a lot of strain.. the only cheapest way is to borrow a ADVC100...
Well, thanks for the information. I'm sure I keep looking for awhile, but I think I have a little more to go on now.
Well, i guess if a laptop doesnt have a FireWire port, one should not try to capture via USB, even on a normal pc it's hard to get good results, by USB, you have sync problems most of the time, I don't say it's impossible, but you need to spend more money on a faster pc, instead, you can buy something like ADVC100 or DAC100 and you have guaranteed good results. and use any software you like....
