what's missing with this xbox basic networking set up?

I am trying to connect my Xbox to a basic functional local area network (2 windows xp Pro computers + a 3COM basic ethernet hub).
On the Xbox, I went into the manual network settings and assigned
an Ip address and subnet Mask (this is a very basic setup. No need of Internet access, pppOE, Xbox live setup ... etc):
IP=192.168.1.17 (since the other 2 computers are 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.16) and
    Subnet=255.255.255.0
I rebooted the Xbox + the 2 computers, but the 2 computers wont ping the xbox IP (keep ketting a Request time out error).
I am out of solution since:
(1)The 2 windows XP Pro have no Firewall blocking IP traffic to trhe Xbox
(2)The ethernet cable that connects the Xbox to the 3 COM standard 8 ports hub is functional (I tried successfully with the other pcs) and you can actually see on the hub the light confirming that the hub sees a connection coming from that Xbox.
(3)There's no issue with the hub's port where the Xbox is plugged to.
(4)What I did matches perfectly what I see in several documentations I found on the Net regarding this setup..but it wont work in my case.
    Thanks for your help.

i have never used a wireless connection for xbox ftp.. in general i find wireless connections to be very tempermental with firewall issues and other basic set up stuff unless the router and wireless peripheral are the same make..especially on first time installs . i can give you a rock solid way of doing a wired connection if you have a cross over cable other than that i would have to trawl countless forums to find the know how for a wireless solution..
dont get me wrong.. it can be done but its not something ive ever looked in to

he said he is going through an ethernet hub so a standard RJ45 should work fine. A cross over is if you go direct from the box to your pc.

    @ aromes
Just out of interest why are you networking it if not to connect to xbox live? If you just want to look inside it I assume it is a modded box yes?

i noticed that once i had finished posting the reply... but in my defence i did say i would write a full walk through for a direct connection as im not too keen on wireless... my walkthrough will acheive the same goal guaranteed.. only with wires... some solution is better than none

You need to have a modded box to ftp into it. If there is a way to do it on an unmodded box i have not heard of it.

    shinnster,
I just wanted to transfer saved games to the Xbox in order to unlock some games that I have hard time unlocking (for example, car racing games like NFS are great...but I have hard time unlocking cars).
My Xbox is not modded since I thought that 2 networkable nodes (the PC and the XBox) should see each other with no hassle.
Sadly, I am discovering that the Xbox is not that network ready node you simply join to your basic IP network.

    Thanks

So all you need to do that is action replay. i assume you have game saves on your pc.
Unfortunately the xbox will not let you network up like you do with pc's :-(
