what with the new 'Vista' coming out soon, and the microsoft 'propaganda' going on around my pc (automatic updates switchin back to on and updating things that i dont want), im seriously considering switching to a different OS. I'd rather not get a Mac, unless someone sheds some light on its usefull/useless properties. I have no idea how Linux works, i tried googleing it but came out short on info about its pros and cons. So what would be your personal favorite OS, and why?

Which do you perfer, apples or oranges?

Every operating system has it's pros and cons.

I take it you know about Windows and OS10.

Linux is free. Programs are limited. You might want to try out a "Live" version of Linux. What this is, is an ISO image that you download then burn to a CD. The CD is bootable and allows you to "test drive" Linux without installing anything on your system. Keep in mind there are a lot of different versions of Linux and two different desktop GUI's. To see the two different ones, try Knoppix and Ubuntu. Ubuntu is becoming very popular of late. Any ways, start here:

Keep in mind that MAC programs are limited in selection. Also they sometimes cost a lot more!

The availability <sp> of programs, is what keeps the cost down for Windows. Fewer software writers for MAC programs is what drives the cost up. Of course, the newest MAC is being built on Intel CPU's which means there are Window simulators that will allow programs being written for Windows to run on MAC's. I don't know how well they work. I've never owned a MAC. And I'm speaking about only what I've read.

There are simulators for Linux that will run Windows programs also. Note however, they don't work for all programs. But Linux is still in development and things are getting better. If you want low cost, take a look at it with a "Live" version as I suggested.

i heard alot of negatives about vista. kinda like you dont own it, it owns your pc. but if, when it comes out, the rumors arent true then ill stick with xp untill i have to upgrade to vista

I agree. I don't think I'm going to be in any hurry to upgrade to Vista. In the past when Windows versions came out (with the exception of ME), I had them on the day it was released. Not this time!

I do have a copy of the Beta 2 and my system will fully support it. I haven't installed it and don't think I want to. I've been a Beta tester before, so that isn't what concerns me. It's other issues about Vista.

Of course, we could be wrong. It could be just fear of the unknown like so many people had with SP2!

20 Things You Won't Like About Vista
Posted by Zonk on Thursday June 01, @02:05PM
    from the keep-counting dept.
    Windows Microsoft
feminazi writes "Computerworld's Scot Finnie details 20 things you won't like in Windows Vista, with a visual tour to prove it. He says that MS has favored security over end-user productivity, making the user feel like a rat caught in a maze with all the protect-you-from-yourself password-entry and 'Continue' boxes required by the User Account Controls feature." From the article: "In its supreme state of being, Microsoft knows precisely what's best for you. It knows that because its well-implemented new Sleep mode uses very little electricity and also takes only two or three seconds to either shut down or restart, you want to use this mode to 'turn off' your computer, whether you realize it or not. It wants to teach you about what's best. It wants to make it harder for you to make a mistake."

go here to read it,the site was slow yesterday..to not working at all

The vista is in testing stage. That's why it's not out yet. But i'm sure microsoft will fix all the bug within 2years. I'm going to upgraded when i have money which is about 7years. So i'm stuck with windows xp for a long time.

also ye will not be copying illegal music and dvd's with vista junk
using clonedvd and what ever ye use to copy movies..

    Windows Vista includes copy protection
vista1The upcoming Vista version of the Windows operating system will not allow illegal copies of music and film. The Windows XP successor will include extensive copy protection mechanisms, according to the Munich-based magazine Windows Professionell.

This includes "Protected Video Path - Output Protection Management" (PVP-OPM), intended to prevent copies from being stored on the hard drive or the contents of the RAM from being read out. PVP-OPM also monitors how content is used by controlling monitor outputs like TV ports. The "Protected User Mode Audio" (PUMA) will also prevent the illegal copying of music. I'm not in such hurry to upgrade to vista. I'm glad all five of my computers can be upgraded though.

I installed Vista Beta 2 on one of my partitions. I kept it for about 10 days and got rid of it. AnyDVD and DVD Shrink do work, but very, very slow. It was going to take over 3 hours to backup a movie that XP did in about 45 minutes (on the same machine!). It is very resource hungry. Linux did the same backup in about 30 minutes.
