can somebody please explain to me the diffference between 1.DVD-RW 2.DVD+RW 3.DVD-R 4.DVD+R If I was going to burn movies onto a blank disk, what disk should I use?
Idealisticly your looking for one that will read DVD +/- RW. AOpen makes some good ones that do burn at about 18x and are still extremely reasonable in price. They'll burn and read CDs at 52x and even support DVD-RAM. But if you're looking for more detailed explanations as to what each of the endings mean, I suggest wikipedia.com and searching there. If you're looking to buy one at the best possible price, I suggest www.newegg.com and make sure to get the warranty on it, it may seem un-nessisary but its better to be safe than sorry.
Take a look at this on which burners to look for.. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/485860 You can use the glossary here @ aD to look up the meanings of all 4 terms you stated. 1. http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/dvd-rw.cfm 2. http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/dvdplusrw.cfm 3. http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/dvd-r.cfm 4. http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/dvdplusr.cfm As for discs, you want to look for either Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden 16x DVDs. Also, before buying, make sure your burner supports the format which you intend to buy. Also, it would be wise to update the firmware on your drive before burning - firmware, quite simply, tells your drive how to burn the disc - software that controls the hardware.
you would need a dual-layer burner and discs, or a burner and discs for hd-level media. *edit* dammit...i let pages load on dialup, and then when i get back around to responding, someone else beat me. dave, you're evil.
my computer is new (got it this year, and on the DVD drive it says a whole bunch of things, one of the things is DVD+R LD what kind of disks sholuld I be looking for?

yeah, in your bolded, you should have "DL," not "LD," omgomga. you can burn on all recordable dvd media variants.
DL media itself isn't really necessary all too often. typically, for backing up files, if something is too big for one dvd, people put it the data on another hard drive. and many movies still are only on single layer; those that aren't often are compressed. stick to Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media, DVD +R being the common choice for most people.
