I am running windows ME, and when I tell it to shut down, it starts to but then is just restarts instead! Help would be greatly appreciated.
This happens to me too. it has something to do with a virus or something, I'm using on windows xp though.
In Me it's most likely an ACPI issue (power supply management). Here's a link to provide issues within XP: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308029
after a little time, if I press the power button once [not held down] it just turns off, does this hurt my system?
Windows ME, like all other DOS built OSes...requires data to be written to the hard drive during shutdown. If this is not done correctly, eventually, and rather quickly, the OS will start to degrade and become corrupt. It is not advisable to shutdown Windows by using the power button. That should only be used when absolutely necessary.
That's fine during the boot up process. But, the power management in Windows ME has been corrupt...that's why it's starting the system over instead of shutting it down. Windows ME is a very unstable operating system...that is why Microsoft left the OS to rot.
