I am dying for someone to help me with this issue. I have a Toshiba M50 Satellite and have a built in CD Burner. Because these new DVD-R's have started using this new dye, my computer wont even recognize the DVD anymore. Maxell told me to talk to Toshiba and ask for them to send a firmware update. Damn toshiba wont answer any questions and want to charge me $50 JUST for the call...who knows how much they charge for the firmware. Does anybody know where I can get the firmware for my computer and happily burn DVDs again??? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the make and model of the drive?
There also might not be a firmware uddate - pc manufacturers that support the drives aren't always the best are keeping them updated.

Have you checked Toshiba website to see if there are any either under the drive itself or the make and model of the laptop?

Your other opinion is switch your discs to Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Sony.

    edit: typos :)

so do these disks not use the dye color that maxell does? Apparently that seems to be the problem according to maxell. I did go to the toshiba website...but they didn't seem to have my model on the site. Its weird because this computer is only 2 MAYBE 3 years old!! The make is Toshiba Satellite M50 -MX5. Maybe you're better at this then I=) Thank you for the info because you're right in saying that switching disks may be the only option. The guy from maxell also said that most times the "updates" on manufacturer websites are outdated and sometimes have older programs then the one you have on your own computer:p.....doesn't surprise me I guess, I though Toshiba would at least direct me somewhere useful.

The ones I listed are pretty compatible with all drives.
I use them too with no problems.

Post back the make and model of the drive. Double click on my computer then right click on the dvd drive then pick properties>hardware tab.
All the drives will be listed there ( for the laptop the hard drive and burner) just need the make and model of the burner.

With the laptop being 'older' in pc years :) and if no firmware support for the drive - finding media that's compatible with it might be a little tough. 8x media would probably be best for it.

Ah the lovely Matshita drive. I have the UJ-840D in mine.
No firmware updates on the this one for Toshiba laptops. I've had none on mine either from HP.

I don't know where you're located but if you're in the US check out supermediastore on Taiyo Yuden 8x.
    Good prices and shipping.
My Matshit does pretty well with these.

For free anti virus check out avg free edition 7.5 - link.
I use it on 1 of my pcs and it does a good job.

Check out this guide by a member here - rav009 - link on other ones.

Almost the same drive - I have the 840D - you have the 840S though there probably isn't much difference. It ain't a great drive that's for sure:)

I'd look for 8x media for it - try Futureshop or Walmart.
Mine does better w/ 8x media then it does 16x media.

I'm not sure of a good store to buy Taiyo Yuden online in Canada.

Oh and no problem on the help.
