BUMP I have the same questions and am a Newbie. Many thanks to Scuba Pete and bbmayo for all the help I have found so far. I will buy a new external burner for my laptop this week and have been influenced by all my reading to the Pioneer or Plextor. My question is should you spend extra money for the combo USB2.0/Firmware DVD's. I have the 1394 port as well. Will this improve the burn and possible problems? If burning slow for quality is the firmware option really necessary. Thanks in advance for your help. Want an external DVD burner for around $150 please advise how to best spend my money.
You can get this enclosure. http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=17-146-153&depa=0 I use one (for my plextor premium). It give you the option of using USB 2.0 or Firewire. And you can get a OEM NEC 3520 for $51 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=27-152-035&DEPA=1
