Which format of disk is best

    I have made video DVDs using both DVD-R and DVD+R disks, and both do play on any DVD video player I have tried them on, however the -Rs play better as they always work flawlessly while the +R disks have a tendancy to stop at the end of some chapters rather than playing on. This has happened both with disks I have authored (ie home movies) and also with copies of commercial DVD films. Has anyone else found this? PS I use the same make for both formats (Sony 8x disks). I have read that only DVD-R disks comply with the official DVD standard is this the reason?

    Not true, it's always just a matter of compatibility. Use a different make of DVD, change the burning program or DVD player and you may get different results.

    Disc brands will offer various results, keep in mind that. I find DVD+R discs to be more expensive and yet I cannot see the premium paid with them. It's true that DVDRW+R offer an advantage about -R about being able to erase them and not needing a full format though.

    Oh, a suggestion for next time... I'd [bold]not[/bold] use the expression "copies of commercial DVD films" here since it could be mistaken with piracy. Read the rules about that... ;o)

    I have found that -R's work on every DVD player I've ever used...at least 32 different machines. including all DVD/VCR combos and DVD/TV combo machines. All my presentations have booted repeatedly, and have never stopped after a chapter point/menu choice.
    On the other hand, I had a pack of +R's, and I gave them away after 4 of the 6 DVD's I made, failed to load on any of my family members players.... I've been making DVD's for about a year and a half now.

    I have a Philips dvdr75 recordable DVD and the only thing they will record on is +r and +rw. I initially was purchasing +r blank DVDs because they were cheaper, but I was having a lot of problems so I finally switched to DVD +RW and have not had a single problem.

    Wallen69 indicated -r dvds comply with the official standard. Is there an official standard now? The last I knew that subject was being argued. It would be nice if all parties finally agreed on something.
