I know this question might be a stupid one but...

I wonder why do we bother and encode movies using divx (or xvid). For a long time now we've had vcd and svcd, that gives oustandig video quality. Divx gives the same quality, but can not be played in a standalone player. As for size, both formats are roughly alike. So I can not see the point in encoding an avi film if, later on, we'll have to change it to mpg in order to play the movie in a satanalone player.
Is it not time for everybody to stick to a compatible format?
    Well, that's all
