I had issues with my rca dvd player and after some research purchased a cyberhome $29 dvd player and it is the friggin bomb never had a problem since and I use the paid version of the same software you are using. I would suggest getting a new player or finding out if there is a firmware upgrade for both or one of you dvd players usually you can download them to a dvd insert the disc in the player and it will perform a software/firmware update on you player. Check with the manufacturers website.

Use Verbatim DVDR- at 4x speed then go from there if you use some outher brand Happy Coasters

Everyone seems to have a brand of choice but that isn't as important although I would agree with the 4x write speed. When it comes to what discs to use there are lots of threads debating and discussing so many brands and preferences.
