This may have been answered before but i am new here and found nothing in a search. Ok what i am attempting to do is take an AVI file and convert it so i can make VCD. What I have done is converted the avi to an mpeg file. The file is large and will not fit on one vcd. I then got a program that splits the mpeg into smaller files. The problem is the mpeg is a Widescreen format and when i split the files it crops it to a square. Can someone please help maybe with instructions on which programs i should use. Thanks for the help.

It was just a program called mpg slitter. No way to adjust settings.

Try TMPGEnc, just click file - mpeg tools - merge & cut!

You don't want to select run until you have edited and saved the file.

When TMPGEnc opens up, close the little tutorial that comes in the window. Then go to file and click on MPEG tools.

A file box with MPEG tools will open up and you want to then click on Merge and cut.

Next you want to make sure your setting is on VCD or SVCD in the file type box at the top. TMPEGEnc needs to know what to save the MPEG as. MPEG-1(Video CD) or MPEG-2(super Video CD)..

Now you just want to hit the add button and add your file you want to edit into the box.

Then all you have to do is just click on that file when it is in the file box and hit edit. If you don't click on the file first you will hit edit all day long and nothing will happen, so make sure your file is high-lighted in blue first.

Once you are in the editing box your movie will appear to where you can hit play and watch the entire thing. Of course you don't want to watch the movie, you want to edit it.

What I normally do is just take out the beginning credits if the file is just a little too big.

Splitting the movie up in two is just as easy. First of all, the little point on the blue bar should be all the way at the beginning of the movie.

Next click { and then drag the point 55-60 min. ahead in the movie to a point that you want to end CD1 of the movie and then click } when you get to that point. I usually pick a spot where new scene is beginning in the movie. If you have done this part right the blue bar will have lighted the point you hit { until the point you hit }.

Next, hit okay and you will be taken back out to the previous menu. At the bottom you will hit browse and enter in what you want to save the file as. Hit okay again and you will then hit run, wait a few minutes and it will be done.

Once the first file is done and you are happy with it, open your big movie again and when you get to edit, slide the point to the part where you left off on the first CD and hit {.
Once you have done that, slide the curser all the way to the end of the movie and hit }. Then hit okay, then browse(save file), and finally Run. That should be it CD2 will then be done.

***Just a side note. When you hit run, any file in the white file box will be saved so if the CD1 part of the movie is still in the file box with the second part CD2 you will want to click on CD1 and hit delete before you hit run. Otherwise you will have part one and part two saved under one file and then you will be back to square one!

    Good luck

hmm I have tested bbMPEG against TMPGEnc for the same thing and i gotta say bbmpeg wins but is harder to use. No glitches on playback afterwards and fine in my stand-alone, just thought i would add that now!
