I have a wifi router in one area of the house, it does reach the entire house with full strength. My question is how do i get a wired connection on the opposite side of the house, other than running a long cable (which is what i cant do). My idea is to use a repeater and run cables out of it. I have no experience with repeaters. would this work? Is there any other ways i can do this? Thank you for everyones help.
Have you tried some of these options.. Sometimes it's as simple as relocation the router or switching the cahnnel. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx
well yes this is true, but the signal DOES reach everywhere i need it to, i just need to convert this signal to a wired connection, so i can connect to laptops that do not have wireless. no i dont want to buy a wifi card for them.
You may wanna check out something like this. http://www.streakwave.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=WifiStation&eq=&Tp= or this may be your cup of tea http://www.streakwave.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=AirWire&eq=&Tp=
Those are good solutions but the problem with repeaters is that they will cut your available bandwidth in half because they have to retransmit everything they do, and as I understand it you need to physically connect the laptops by cable at some point. You could buy another router, set it up closer to the laptop area and turn it into a wireless LAN Bridge. Then you will only need a small amount of CAT5e cable to physically connect to your laptops.
that sound like what im looking for! i already have another router, i havent heard of a LAN bridge though, ill do some research. Thanks
well if you dont want to mess with the wires, i would get a wireless card, or a wireless USB adapter. You can get them at walmart for around $40-$60. A little wireless USB adapter is a very useful item, you can switch it out with other computers easily. easy worth buying. I would suggest the linksys brand. do your research tho.
