i recently found my [bold]windows xp[/bold] disk had a [bold]crack along the middle of it[/bold]. i dont know how this could have happened, but i was in a couple of pc shops in glasgow today & they told me that if i contacted windows then they will send me a replacement free of charge.. they also said that it isnt the disk that you pay all the money for, its the certificate of authenticity & product key.. is this true & can i get a new disk from microsoft? its [bold]windows xp home edition, version 2002 & includes sp2..[/bold] any help or suggestions is appreciated, [bold]THANKS[/bold]
any copy of windows xp will work if you have your serial.Just borrow a buddys disc and enter your key for the install.should work just fine. You can ligitimatly make a copy because you have a user license.
thread teleported out of a Mac forum. also, peanuts2, nice replies, i don't think. here's some info that may help, read this thread and the link from Fiend - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/411959/2487339
IF you provide microsoft with proof of purchase and your product key, they will probably offer to send you a replacement disc for some fee. However, you could also just try to make a copy of it (yes, this is legal if it is to replace a damaged disc), which would save you some cash. I'd suggest using some high quality CD or DVD to make the copy.
