I have a .mkv file that I am trying to convert to be burned onto a standard 4.7 GB DVD-R. After I use WinAVI to create the DVD and play it on my computer, the video isn't so bad. However, when I play it on my DVD player, it is very choppy, including the audio. Is it a problem with the disk or with my DVD player? (It's about 7 years old.)

It could be both, but I would try diferent media first.
Something like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, (DVD-R).

But if I first convert the MKV to an AVI and then to a DVD, it's fine...(albeit with worse quality)
