Hey all on my kids computer he did something of course hes a kid so he has no idea what! But anyways when we start it up it says no operating system. I tried to load the windows 98 cd but it starts then a little way on it says there is an error because it does not have a hard disk or there is a problem with the hard drive. Well we had 2 hard drives on this machine so we disable the orginal and pulled in the 2nd one and it still says the same thing. Im at a lose on what to do.... Any ideas???????? THanks
Sorry I double posted but I think this was in the wrong spot!

Knowing that more than one hard drive is not being recognized by the system is an sign that the motherboard's chipset (the chip that controls the interaction between all the system components) may have failed. Each channel is called IDE, and that chipset supports two channels, each one supporting two separate drives called Primary (master) and Secondary (slave). Just because the primary channel fails doesn't mean the secondary did along with it.

So, you have a couple of choices...

First, take the first hard drive you had, and set the jumpers on the drive (found between the IDE and power cable connections) and set it to "slave". Then, plug it into the second IDE connection on the flat gray ribbon cable. Leave the first connection on the cable disconnected. It doesn't really matter which, but it keeps you from getting confused.

    Try starting the computer again.

Or....there is also a second IDE connection on the ribbon cable going to your CD drive. If that port is not used, you can (keep the first hard drive's jumper setting set to "slave") connect the first drive to that IDE connection. NOTE: If the CD drive's ribbon cable is 40 pin, and not 80 pin (you'll know the difference by looking at both ribbon cables, one will have more wires)...use the 80 pin cable to connect the hard drive and CD drive.

The computer will look for the first partition with the operating system...which will still be your first hard drive, no matter what IDE channel it's on.

If either of them work, you could leave the first drive connected to the same cable as the CD drive, and reconnect the second drive back to the second position on the other ribbon cable as it was to begin with.

...then try accessing the BIOS to see if you can auto-detect the hard drives

Ignore all the errors about missing files. Ignore the wizard trying to install the card during Windows startup. Get to the desktop, insert the floppy disk with the network card drivers and install.

When you installed 98, did you receive any errors about missing files and chose to ignore them?
