Hey, Windows defrag cannot defragment my harddrive. it's like 35% fragmented... and I tried the regular windows defrag program, I tried command line defrag, and I tried the defrag program on hiren's boot CD 9.1. I need something to help me actually defrag my computer sucessfully. Windows Defrag always says it completes, and the fragmented files remain. Some of them are effecting my windows and gaming performance drastically. One of the files for an important game that I frequently play is in almost 20,000 fragments. I am looking for any solution to fix this that is either free, or involves low to mid expense software. I do NOT want anything that requires special hardware. the only possible thing I can think of it to format my extra hard disk (used for archiving and large ISO files) and copy this entire HD over to it, then copying it back to the original, after a format. I believe that would put the files into the most contiguous possible positions, but I don't know. So far, I've tried standard formats, and safe mode formats, and a format with virtual memory disabled. (Hey, what the hell, right? I thought maybe clearing up freespace might help it out) Please help me, i'd really appreciate it. And I know, I'm not going to forget to defrag for a few months ever again.
You could also look at Auslogics Disk Defrag. It is freeware. http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php
auslogics defragger failed to work for my fragmented files. The files still fragmented are NOT still in memory, they just won't defragment. I've purchased o&o's defrag, I'm hoping it's worth the money. It's working now. Maybe this will work, eh? If it does, I owe you one. I'll update you one when it's finished... EDIT O&O worked! It managed to defragment many of the important and large fragmented files, and got me down to about 10% fragmentation. Safe mode with no virtual memory should clean up the rest of that.
