windows installer

    everytime i right click a file, folder, or program the windows installer message appears. It says "preparing to install" and lasts for maybe 3-5 seconds then is gone. There is no problem loading or opening any files but it is annoying. Can anyone explain why this is happening and what i can do to stop it from happening in the future? Thanks guys

    When did it start - did you try to install or uninstall a program and it didn't?
    Do you have a Restore Point that predates the symptoms?

    this problem happend yesterday. And i think this is the reason why:

    1. I had an "old external hard drive" that i used for Adobe master program. The hard drive began to go bad so i purchased a new one and transfered the files to the new drive. The "old external hard drive" was marked as "Q drive" on my computer. Well the new drive is marked as "E drive".

    Here is what else i know

    2. Upon reboot i have a "windows installer" box that appeared and it says:
    "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"

    "Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "AcroPro.msi" in the box below"

    Use Source Drop down menu gives:
    Q:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Setup Files\"and then a 31 digit code"\

    Try renaming the new drive.
    My Computer > Manage > Disk management
    Highlight the Volume and Change drive letter from E to Q.

    where do you find "manage" after "my compuer"

    Right click on My Computer.
    It should be in the menu (XP).

    Hey that actually worked and i thank you very much. Could you explain why or what was happening that caused that problem and how to avoid that in the future?

    I had a similar problem once where that message would appear when Microsoft Word was run.
    The program had not installed properly (I didn't know that)and it was in an obscure way asking for the original disks to fix it.

    In hindsight, I assume that in your case, registry entries referring to drive Q (which no longer existed) was the reason - which is similar to a program which hadn't been installed or un-installed properly.
