windows media players/recorders

Is there a software app like vlc that includes a way to open a website that provides streaming so that the app can record/play any selected content on the fly simply by opening the stream and selecting the record button? In other words a combination of a site like YOU TUBE and VLC. In order to record YT I need to find the URL for specific content, close YT, open VLC, type in the URL, open it, then record it. Playing it can be done using any player on the desktop. A combination app that dispenses with URL's would be nice.
