I just installed Roxio CD & DVD Creator 6 because I needed to try to backup some files onto a DVD. Well, not really a surprise since Roxio Easy DVD Copier screwed up my drivers, but Creator 6 messed up my drive! When I go into my computer the drive is listed as a CD Drive instead of a DVD/CD RW (or whatever the exact name is). Other programs recongize the drive as the DVD burner (InterDVD, DVD Shrink, etc) but nothing from Windows. This gives me a big problem trying to copy the files- when I try to drag files to the drive to burn them- it says there is a problem and the files can not be moved. Help! What do I do?

Should I just remove Roxio? If so, what can I use to burn my files to a DVD? Roxio is what came with the computer. Should Windows be able to burn a DVD like it can burn a CD?

Windows does recognize it as cd drive. This is normal.

What type of files are you trying to burn? Movies, data, or both?

Also, how are you attempting to copy them? I do not understand what you mean by drag and drop.

I've been trying to burn both movies and data. I can burn the movies most of the time but I am having ALL SORTS of problems burning data. I had no luck at all burning the data to a DVD+R using Roxio because even Roxio kept saying the disk had 0 bytes free and 0 bytes used. IT would part way through the burning and then come up with one error or another making the program stop and more times than not causing my computer to crash and close down.

(Drag and Drop is a "program" within Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 that stays on top of the screen and you simply click on a file/folder and drag it on top of the program and it puts it into the "to be burned" program.)

I got it to work ONCE, but when I put the DVD back into my drive to check if everything burned successfully most of the folders that were burned were empty- so the program burned the folders but not the programs in the folders.

So I gave up with Roxio and tried using a few trial programs I found through this site. Out of the four programs I tried (deepburner, can't remember the other programs) only Easy Audio Data CD DVD Burner actually burned a DVD (AFTER I sht off the "check DVD before burn" because each time it checked the DVD it would say I needed to insert a writeable DVD even though the program said it was an empty DVD+R when I clicked on MEdia info).

Now I have a new problem- When I insert that DVD+R that I burned autoplay keeps searching non-stop but doesn't play. WHen I click on My Computer and try to open the disc that way the window stops responding for a few minutes then it'll show the "shared pictures" folder present on the DVD. If you try to click on that it'll again stop responding and then I just get the hourglass forever- it'll never open the flder to view the files.

I have Roxio, but I have not installed it, so I cannot give you any advice there.

For backing up movies, I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. DVDD is probably the best ripper out there and can burn normal sized (4.7GB) movies by itself. For larger movies, you can either use shrink by itself or DVDD to rip, Shrink to encode and DVDD to burn.

For data so far I have only used Plextools Pro. I am not sure if this is compatible with anything but a Plextor burner. When I used to back up on cd I used Nero. That gave me problems (probably because I have an adaptec utility on my pc), but most people love it.

I don't know what to say about the dvds burning blank. Maybe try updating the firmware on your drive. You should also write to Roxio and tell them your problem. Drag and drop seems kid of wrong to me though. I remember the old adaptec program had a drag and drop program. That formatted the disc to be used like a hard drive.

Try using advanced features even if you don't really know what you are doing, it is better than ruining your discs. See if there is a Data/ISO feature or some type of multisession disc feature and use that. When you have options look at them, but you will probably have to change nothing. You will get a drag and drop screen there as well, but you will have an internal file browser.

If that doesn't help, try a demo of nero.

If i'm not mistaken, Roxio creator 6 is an old oem program furnished with hardware. It's rather inefective, to say the least. It has also been reported here in aD, that in some cases, it does not even like to be on the same computer with nero. If youy feel that it messed up your drive, you should dump it. You can download Nero, right here at afterdawn.

Nero doesn't hold a candle to Roxio, even Roxio 6, depending on what you want to do.

2tall, first of all, any packet writing software, such as Roxio's Drag to Disc, Nero's InCD is unstable at best. Why packet writing software was ever made, is beyond me. It is good for one thing. Transferring data from one computer, to another, immediately after burning, using that type of software.

Packet writing software is an attempt by software manufacturers, to make an optical drive, emulate a floppy disk. That just doesn't happen.

If you want to look for a solution for you problem, go to Roxio's site, do a search, and make sure that you post your problem in the version 6 forums. Here is a link to the forums.

GrandPa, I have to say that your statement that Nero does not hold a candle to Roxio is nonsense. I have used both and Nero is much better. Roxio is slower and produces at leats twice the number of coasters.

wallen, if you do any video editing, you will find that Nero is extremely limited when compared to Roxio EMC 7.1 or EMC 7.5.
