    hi
my pc seems to be running slow & freezing up with explorer (v6) & sometimes will not allow to right click & select open in new window (this is not pop up blocker as nothing informs me a pop up was blocked as usual) i have xp installed. i have not installed anything new. i was going to do a system restore but all but 2 of the restore points were gone (this was yesterday) today there is only 1 restore point & no undo last restore point? my restore setting are set to max & usually there are plenty of restore points to select from. i run microsoft antispyware & norton which is all up to date & do not show any viruses. has anyone ever had this? could it be a virus that norton is not finding?
    any help is appreciated

BTW i have plent of space on my hard drive so it is not because of lack of space

try disabeling syatem restore in the control pannel under system check your dma on your hdd the guide is in my sig also check your page file size
try it on system managed size
have a look at how many processes you are running and your idle cpu ussage
those come to mind for starters
    post back with your results

    hi
i have turned off system restore, i was going to check dma as per alkohol's guide but when i click on ide devices i do not get an "advanced" tab to change/modify dma settings so dont know how to proceed?
my cpu usage when idle is varying from 0 - 4%
page file size is 271MB (this is from the task manager screen, i think this is waht you mean)
there are 43 process running i can list them for you if you need them (this is with explorer running)
BTW i am networked to my wifes laptop if this makes any difference.

    thanks for your help

did you expand out ide devices you should see primary and secondary channels these are the ones you need to check
go back into system in the control pannel under the advanced tab goto performance advanced virtual memory select the button labled system managed then click set and apply then ok it will prompt you to reboot see how you go then

hi yes i did expand the ide devices & it did show primary & secondary but they wouldnt expand & when i click on them is shows all the tabs in alkohols guide except the advanced tab??? i have just done the virtual memory like you said in your last post, i will see if this solves it (i guess i wont know for a few days to give it chance to create some restore points) i will let you know how it worked out.

thanks for your help it is greatly appreciated.
