Hopefully I am posting this in the right forum. I have been having trouble getting my computer to get updates automatically. When I go the the microsoft website to get the updates, it just keeps looking for them and eventually locks up. Finally I turned off the automatic updates feature because svchost.exe was taking up all my cpu resources for the first 10 minutes after I started my computer and never getting anything accomplished. I thought the problem may have been caused by the fact that I did not install the Windows Genuine Advantage software during a download but I recently installed that and it is still a problem. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Running windows xp sp2, P3 933Mhz, 512MB Ram
The problem is the P3 chip. The update will suck a lot of power. If you need a numbeer of updates it may be too much to handle. When I did a re-install form SP2 it took forever to update. I have a P4 3.2 and broadband. You can do a manual search. After you get most you can find, try the automactic again. You can find the updates on your PC in the control pannel under installed programs. Check the box to show updates. Correction. The problem is not the P3 chip. The CPU doesn't have anything to do with how the WU service works. The problems are happening at the Windows Update service ... currently, MS is working on getting a new system going because the lockup is causing all kinds of problems. There are temporary patches and work-arounds, but it's time consuming and may even be confusing. Start here, do some research and follow up on the links the other sites provide.
Thank you both for the responses. I have checked out that site and the article it refers to and downloaded part 1 of the fix for it. Thanks again. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
