A friend of mine has a mchine thats running Xp and when she goes to Microsofts web site to do upgrades it will not allow her to download. The problem does not occur until it actually wants to download the updates, the scanning etc all works fine (as to what she has/needs). She has contacted Microsoft who gave her a number of "checks" to do and 3/4 all comback as being ok! She does not understand what they are asking her to do in the 4th chk.She also has defender and that is saying that her machine is working perfectly. She is using avg antivirus. I do not know if its relevant or not but she still has Symantec Liveupdate on her pc even though she has deleted Norton, any ideas?
A really good way to remove Symantec, is to NOT just use their uninstaller....but to manually perform surgery!! Uninstall LiveUpdate. Do a search for anything on the system "Symantec" or "Norton". Delete all folders/files you've found. Use RegSeeker or CCleaner and clean the registry. Not too familiar with CCleaner but it does a great job. With RegSeeker, it has a registry search feature you can also use to search the registry for Symantec and Norton. Remove all that you find. Restart the system when finished.

Anythings possible. Symantec was known to be a great supplier of PC utilities back in the day...but in the past few years has risen to the top of the most bloated, system hogging and restrictive software packages anyone could install. I've had less problems removing the most dangerous computer viruses then I have getting rid of Norton because it implants itself everywhere. Not to mention the step by step uninstall of each individual component that is necessary...even though installing them only took a single action. Go figure. Norton can be good if left to it's individual components...I'd advise to stay away from the package deals (or suites).
