Hi, is it possible to have both windows xp and windows 2000 on the same pc without having some kind of conflict between the operating systems? I am currently using windows xp pro with sp2 and all the updates/patches etc installed on my xp os. Also I have got a genuine version of the windows 2000 operating system from a nearby retail store for around $20 which was interesting because the initial value is around $99. Please provide me with straight-forward instructions because I don't know much about the dual-boot option for the use of two operating systems for the same PC system. Thanks.
edit your sig to conform to forum rules. 2. An image-only signature should be less than 50kb in size, and be at most 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall. 4. If you want to use both text and image in your signature the image should not be more than 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall, and you can use up to three lines of text.
dragonz17, 1. Make sure you have a partition without any installed OS and enough free space to hold Windows 2000 2. Boot with the Windows 2000 CD and install it on that partition (NOT on the one with windows XP on it!) 3. After Windows 2000 gets installed completely, insert your Windows XP in your CD-Rom Drive and boot with it. On the first menu (which should look similar to the Windows 2000 menu), select the 'Repair' option. 4. If asked, login using an administrator account 5. Type "fixboot c:" (without the quotes) 6. If it asks you if you are sure, say yes. 7. Type the following commands in order, pressing Enter after each line: Replace x:\ with your CD Drive More information on this topic: http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_2000_after_windows_xp.htm
-ashwin18 thanx for the reply, so installing windows 2000 the way you stated, will my xp still be intact and bootable?
Of course. Just make sure you read everything from my above post, and also from the setup screens of Win2k and XP.
-ashwin18 cheers for the help, now i can boot windows xp and win 2000 on my pc. p.s. when i boot up- i get an option to boot up from windows xp and windows 2000 which is great but i also get another boot option? it's called "tuneup backup windows" (along those lines) why does this show? is there a way to remove this?
dragonz17, did you not read my earlier post about your sig size? you have til midnight tonight to reduce it to forum specs or get a temp ban, your choice!!
