I have a laptop with 64 MB RAM and 233 Mhz CPU and I just want to know will Windows Xp Professional work on my laptop, I don't care if it runs very slow but will it work?
no as you don't have enough ram. when trying to load, it will check your system & say you need 128meg. as you have 233mhz whether p1 or p2 than should have at least 256meg so can run faster.
s2a I would seriously considering upgrading your computer before upgrading your OS. Another stick off ram wouldn't break the bank balance
check your laptop manual to see what the ram limit is & the type of ram used as i've seen at least 4 different types of ram used on laptops.
What OS are you using now? Windows XP is a resource Hog. It takes up 100+ MB of RAM with a clean install and no other programs installed or running. All I have on my Windows XP Pro Partition is Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and SAV9.02 and I am using 150MB of RAM (yes no other software installed). I also have it configured to look like Windows 2000 and I turned off a ton of services. On my Windows 2000 parition, I have SAV10, Sygate Personal Pro, Acrotray (for .pdf conversion) and I am running Firefox with multiple windows and tabs, TMPGEnc is encoding a movie and I am using 220 MB of ram. Plus I have tons of professional software including animation apps, DVD Authoring, Sound Editing, etc... installed. When I installed SAV10 on the Windows XP Pro parition, it used up over 250 MB of RAM by itself (over 400 Total) that's why I had to go back to SAV9.02!!! On Windows 2000 it uses about 24 MB. The general rule of thumb is whatever RAM a program will use on windows 2000 at least double it for XP. Whatever it will use on Windows 98, triple it for XP. Also, whatever the software manufacturer recommends multiply it by 4 and raise CPU speed by 33%. If you need an NT OS, then go for Windows 2000 pro. It is cheaper and uses less resources. The only drawback is that you have to download & install a lot of drivers yourself including modem, ethernet, & sound card, so you would have to download all that stuff beforehand. If you have Windows 98SE or Windows ME, just stick with that. There is no benefit to Windows XP Pro (or w2k pro ) other than NTFS capable of larger file sizes and more compatibility with professional grade software (which needs 1 gig of RAM anyways). The safer security is all a bunch of crap. Yeah, SP2 is safer than no SP, but you can manually configure a no SP install to be safer by turing off some MS services. I think it may actually be more unsafe than any other Windows just because every hacker has targeted Windows XP. Also, all you need to make an OS safe is to use Firefox with a couple of extentions. If you install Windows XP Pro, it will work, but you will be using your HD as RAM, which will cause your computer to lag. Also, the slower CPU and the lack of resources will cause your internet to lag as well. Your laptop can probably take 256 MB RAM max, but check your manual as suggested to make sure. If you can upgrade the RAM for very little money, then go for that. Otherwise you should look for some PC deals. I saw a cheap AMD (something like AMD Sempron 2200+) Desktop PC for $99 after $100 isntant rebate. Upgrading RAM will be close to this amount and you have to think about your CPU still being slow. MS will stop supporting Windows XP soon, and begin forcing people to buy into their new OS when it comes out and the 64bit windows.
