I keep trying to get fax services on my windows xp and it keeps telling me "Please insert the compact disc labeled "Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD". What is this and how do I get it?
How old is your PC? Brand and model? Is your computers OS fully updated, with SP1, and SP2? Do you have WinXP installation CD/s?
I have a Compaq Presario V5000 laptop. As far as I know it is updated. I just had it in for warranty repair and they reloaded the system. I did have an installation CD when I bought it in May 06. But I can't find it anywhere. So I wondered if I could just download it from somewhere.
Let's start here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx Let me know if this information was helpful. If your still unable to get the Windows XP built in fax working. The fax component software is missing from your HDD. You would either need the installation CD, or can possibily download it. Not sure, I've never done this. But, if the above directions don't get your fax working. Get back to me and I'll see if I can locate a download. Perhaps the repair shop used their own CD which didn't include the fax component you needed. You will need to contact your System Builder(Compaq)for another installation CD. Not sure what they cost. Are you still under warranty? I once lost mine and HP replaced it for free. Now, that Compaq is owned by HP, you may be able to do the same if your covered. For your Operation System updates follow this path: Start> All Programs> Windows Update> Get Microsoft update today> Install ActiveX control> Install> Check for updates> Express> Install updates. Let me know what you had to do here. Make sure you select automatic updates for in the future, just set a time when your computer will be on to download them. But, don't turn this on until you have manualy updated everything. After each update you will be prompted to reboot, keep returning to the windows update site until there are no more updates to download.
