I have a hauppauge HVR-1600 HDTV tuner capture card. The software i'm using to capture is WinTv (right now I have the updated version that is on hauppauge website which is version 6). I have my STB hooked up via coax cable so that i can capture from the cable box (analog). The end result of the capture is that I get an .MPG file, where the audio codec used is MPEG 1 Layer 2. WIthin the options of the WinTV software are settings for audio of usinjg either MP1, MP2, or AC3, but only MP2 is available to select (even though i have the AC3 codec installed). I even ensured i reinstalled the winTV software after installing the necessary codecs.

The end results is I want an AVI container file with MP3 audio (using LAME), and XVID video. When I try to convert the file, i get an error ""No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format." The source audio is the MPEG 1 layer 2 file. I installed the QMPEG 2 audio codec that is linked at this site (http://www.geocities.com/wilbertdijkhof/qmpeg_mp2.zip ). Then i try again and now i get a message saying the Audio source is jammed trying to decompress. (I can't remember the exact message, but its like that).

The steps i'm taking are I run the .mpg file through dgindex, create the .d2v and mpa file.. then i create the avs file.. I go into vdubmod add the mpa stream.. compression and select LAME MP3..

    So., i want to either
    1) capture the video in a different audio codec so that i can then encode the file correctly, or
    2) find a codec that i can use to decompress the MPEG 1 layer 2 audio.

Oh - important thing to note: If I use AutoGK it works fine, yet manually doing it with vdubmod doesn't. Wouldn't this mean that i must have the necessary codec somewhere? I don't want to use autoGK though because i want to set the filters and various options for higher quality.

I've tried uninstalling all my codecs and reinstalling them. I first tried installing only what was necessary.. that didn't help, so then i tried broad spectrum attack and installed mega codec pack -that didn't help either.

    Any advice is appreciated!

edit: forgot to mention OS is Windows XP Media Centre Edition if that is relevant.

I can't offer much, I have the same card, same WinTV, except it will only save as mpeg2 with ac3 audio - no capture option to be seen (notwithstanding the software guide).
Removed and reinstalled the WINTV software - nothing helped.
DGIndex, and VirtualDubMod crash using the source and an AVISynth script referencing these files also crashes.

    I switched to 'Beyond TV'.
It captures as transport streams which can be fed to DGIndex without any problem, thence to VirtualDub (m2v and wav) -the newer VDub accepts mpeg without plugins..
BTV also offers the option to compress to AVI (DivX) when requested or at a scheduled TOD.
