I have a Sony laptop, the sticker on the bottom says model number PCG-6H2N. It's a Japanese model. The DVD burner in the laptop is, according to the properties panel, a "MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-832S".

Recently I have the following problem with the DVD burner: it burns CDs fine, but it does not burn DVDs anymore. The following happens when I use burning software: the cache gets full, but the actual burning process does not progress at all, it just stays at 0%.

I tried several burning programs: Alcohol 120%, Nero, Roxio, Ashampoo; all show the same behaviour, they do not pop up an error message or anything, the burning process does simply not progress.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me out here; especially I wonder if it is a driver/software problem or if the hardware is broken?

It would be nice to have some hints so that I can try to track down the problem myself before I go to the shop to get a new drive installed.

What media are you using? And what is the firmware on your drive at present?

I used a variety of different media, no-name as well as brands.

I don't know which firmware it has, how can I find that out? Do you think it is related to my problem? Because it was working all the time, and suddenly the problem I described occured.

Well bad media could be causing your errors...The best types are Verbatim and Sony.
And as for your firmware, it can be found out by d/l'ing and running this tool...
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/nero_info_tool.cfm
And it could be a firmware problem if this is a new accurenence with new media. As firmware upgrades your drive to regonise new disk codes.
Or the laser could be dieing...indicating a dead drive or slower speeds...

As I said, I used different types of media for testing, so the problem is very unlikely to be caused by the media.

Have you any proove that Verbatim and Sony are "best"? Because I don't believe you. Also, what you write about the firmware and "laser dying" is bullshit and commonplaces that you could write to almost any burner-related problem. I think you don't know what you are talking about.

Ok well there is lots of proof that Verbs and Sony are the est type of media, judged on Nero scans of burnt disks and plain reliability. I can bet you REAL MONEY that anyone on this forum would back me up on that. As for what I suggested, yes they are commonplace and which is why i stated them to elimante the possibilites. As for your laser dieing there is a very strong chance of this, as in a DVD drive there are two lasers; one for CD's and one for DVD's. So if the laser is dieing it might still read the dvd's but not write them.

So if you do not want my help (which btw you aren't getting any more of) then tough.
I belive you should check your facts.

@ Gojira The info Ripper is completely true and on. The only bulsh$# is your attitude toward someone trying to help. People don't get paid for this and I doubt if anyone else is going to help you again. JMO

I don't care about this kind of "help". The thing about Verbatim/Sony media being the best media is just the current groupthink on afterdawn. Even if that would be the best media, since when is a dvd burner supposed to work on certain types of brands only? The one I have worked on 10+ different types of DVD media perfectly, suddenly it stopped working, so what has that to do with the media? That was a rethorical question, is has nothing to do with it of corse.

Even if I had downloaded and installed that firmware tool, that guy would have just said that it's either the media or the laser is dying, so he is just trying to make himself important or what? Anyway I don't care, I just buy a new burner that's less hassle than seeking "help" from you.

Aswell as giving you some advice, I will also be reporting you for your pathetic attitude. You are not the type of person we need around here.

Anyways, from the little information you have given us, I would say either you have changed a setting in the burning program you usually use and then have not tried any other program(Tis the old "Lets not, but say we did" trick) or your media is crap(Probably not the case as the cache is filling up and your burner is not even trying to write. Or you burner is not being properly detected by windows and it is instead writing to a virtual drive(Probably not though).

Or last but not least, [bold]your drive is F**KED[/bold].

Now, as for Rippers recomendations on media; there is an old aussie saying that fits this one. "50 000 blowflies can't be wrong" and by that we mean, if the masses say it's good, then there is a pretty damn good chance that the masses are frickin right.

Now wind your head in before ddp or some other mod just as vindictive comes and winds it in for you.

@Gojira: I'm definately going to jump in here and defend Ripper. As stated earlier, we spend countless amount of time on these forums with the intent to help people out, usually without even a thank you. What we always say may not be proven fact, but based on our personal experiences and our experiences here on the forum it is what we beleive to be true. Ripper went out of his way to find a link for you to download a firmware, gave you other options on why the drive may be bad and had nothing but the intentions of helping you solve your problem. Your piss poor attitude gets me more angry than anything else. If you know so much about what media is the best, then figure out your own problem with your drive, since you seem to know everything else. Dont come here with questions then tell people that their answer is wrong, when you dont even know the correct answer. Man am I pissed off right now with the attitude of the new people on this forum.....I'm gonna stop typing before I get suspended or banned for saying something stupid.

@Ripper: Keep up the good work here on the forums!!

@ the @sshole posting this : how about we play a game ?
It's called hide and GO F**K YOURSELF.
Ripper gave you the proper advice, even suggested changing to proper media as opposed to the piss poor cr@p you are apparently ruining your drive with now, and this is the thanks he gets ?
I say the admins should make an exception and give out your IP to all befriended and affiliated sites and forums so they can all ban your sorry @ss.
