Worked for DVD+RW, not DVD+R, make sense?

Hi there, this is my first post. I have a Creative DVD+/-rw Dual 8X Dvdcreative Labs Dvd +/- Rw Burner. I was having some trouble with it at the beginning, but after rearranging the drives and stuff, I finally got it able to work.

First I tried burning a Memorex CD-RW, that didn't work.
Second I tried burning a TDK CD-RW, that worked.

Then I started working on DVD's. I've been able to make disk images and copy them onto a Fuji Film DVD+RW with no problem. I use nero 6 and it copies no problem at 4x.

THEN, I tried copying a disc image to a Memorex DVD+R using nero, it would copy extremely slow, then at around 25% it would just stop copying all together and the program would freeze.

I then tried copying a disc image to a Verbatim DVD+R using nero, I got the same results as with the Memorex disc.

I then tried copying a disc image using DVDDecrypter, this is when I found out that the writer is only copying at about .5x and .6x, I didn't stick around to see if it would just die out eventually, instead I just cancelled the burn.

So so far I've ruined 4 DVD+R's. I don't understand why I can burn DVD+RW's without a problem but DVD+R's are being such a pain. If anyone has had similar problems please let me know, I'm going crazy here. Thanks a whole lot.

Hi BigPerm, Welcome to the club. Here's a few things to try. First go into device manager and remove the burner drive, reboot and let Windows reinstall the drive. This will correct any driver problems with the drive itself. Next go back to device manager and check both IDE channels to make sure they are sey for DMA if available. They should not be set for PIO. If you can't get them to go into DMA mode, remove them also and let Windows reinstall them . If the IDE channels are in PIO mode everything will run slow like you are saying and could cause burn problems as well. Last, check to make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner drive. You can download it from the burner manufacturer's site. I like the hacked firmware better from this site.
    http://www.rpc1.com.
The hacked firmware usually improves the overall operation of the drive but could void the warranty if you have any remaining. So you might want to stick with the OEM firmware for now.

Hello again. Thanks for your help Jerry. I tried doing what you told me to do, first I uninstalled the drive so that Windows would reinstall it. I then found out that my Secondary IDE Channel was set to PIO, i uninstalled it then let it reinstall it. I also upgraded the driver at the Creative website. I thought it was fixed when I used DVD Decrypter to burn a disc image because it was really slow at first, but then kicked up all the way to 4x. I was happy until I got some error after about 25%. I dunno, but I tried burning a disc image with nero and I got some crazy stuff, here's a screenshot.

I thought it was strange when it said something about "generating DVD compatability borders" er something, I don't know.

I noticed another thing that was weird, when there is no disc in the writer drive, it says in My Computer that its a DVD-RW drive. But when I put in a DVD+R, I get some wackiness, here's a screenshot.

The E: drive is my DVDRW writer, even though before I reinstalled the drivers it was F:, but no matter. I just thought it was weird that now it says CD Drive, instead of DVDRW drive. And thats the properties menu that makes it look to me like its not reading the DVD+R properly. If anyone else can help me I would REALLY appreciate it, thanks again Jerry, if your out therre maybe you can help me again.

Hi BigPerm, Your screen shots didn't come through but we'll try a few other things anyway. You said you have a error at 25%. Was this when ripping or burning? If while ripping, it could be from a dirty or scratched original. Or from some other way the data is corrupt on the original. If the error is during the burnback, it could be from cheap-poor quality blank media. I always use Ritek but Verbatim is another good choice. Also you might need to un-install and then reload Nero too. Some times Just doing the re-install of the programs straightens out the problems. Memorex brand blank media is considered poor quality media at this time. They don't make their blanks, they purchase them and then put their name on them. The present company they buy from Is CMC-MAG which makes very poor quality media.
Keep trying, we will get you going.

One other thing, see if your burner drive is set as Master on the secondary IDE cable. This is the best place for it.
    Jerry

I have this same problem with Nero recode, I can burn with rw-dvd but not regular dvd's, they go to error somewhere into burning and I use what is sugested by most here.

Hey there again, I guess I forgot to mention that all of these problems is occurring when I'm trying to burn the dvd's. I also happen to know that I have my Burner set to Master because that was one of the things I was tinkering with way in the beginning, then I sent it to master. I don't know why my screenshots aren't working, that's weird because I put the shots in my Yahoo briefcase, it shows up on my screen, oh well though. Anyways, I appreciate you helping me Jerry, hopefully I can get this thing going eventually.
