I've been using Unleash-X as my main dashboard for some time now. I wanted to install XBMC as my dash instead so I used the AID v4.3 disc (as I always have) to install it.

On reboot the xbox froze displaying thr XBMC logo.

I used the AID disc to re-install Unleash-X with XBMC as an app. Now XBMC won't boot as an app either, no matter what dash I have installed.

Is it worth reformating the HDD?

    I have a hardmodded v1.3 Xbox with a 20GB HDD.

Right, I re-formatted the hdd and cloned my original hdd onto it.

XBMC is now booting as an app but not as a dash.

Hey bro, grab a copy of Slayers 2.7 and use that for a format
and install disc. After that, flash your bios with X25035.
When you do that download the X2config from the usual place
and set the boot priority to F:apps/xbmc/default.xbe and reboot
    and everything should work fine.

Note: you dont have to edit the bios before you flash.
the bios looks for an .INI file on the C: drive to start
everything up the way you want.
