I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to fix the disc read error for the XBox? I found an xbox on Ebay for $40, but it's got this problem, and if it is possible to be fixed, I was going to purchase it.
A nice one like this, http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-xb-616t is $125 or you can just get another stock one http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-xb-repdrive that is only $33. Both work well, samsung one is just a little nicer, it should be for the price.
i'm at work, so the sites for those are blocked and I can't see them... do you know if the drive comes with the lense?
for what ur gonna spend after its all said and done just buy a new box or look for one at a pawn shop or keep searchin ebay for one that isnt broken that would be best
What I would do before buying a new drive (as silly as it may sound) would be to open the DVD drive up and use a Q-tip and a little alcohol on one end and clean the lense with it. Then use the other end to dry it. Just be real gentle when doing so. Believe it or not it might just work! Ive used this method on PS2s and CD players with about a 75% success rate. Why not give it a try? Its useless in its present state anyways.

Wow triple post, nice. Ya try cleaning the lens. But if that doesn't help a new lens or even the $30 dollar drive would be a good deal if your getting the xbox for $40.
I'm still debating... cause if my brother gets the 360, i'll probably take his original... but thank you for ALL of your help. You've been great.
think about it dude 30 for new lens 40 for xbox then u have to add shipping on both the xbox and the new lens ur lookin at anywhere from 85-100$ right there id go with a new one or atleast one that works for that much.also if u dont know what ur doin ur may screw something else up ribbon cabels on lens drives a very easily ripped
There's no ribbon cables in an Xbox, the ps2 has those. The xbox has 1 IDE cable like a computer and uses a yellow/white plug for power. Totally easy honest
i mean if hes replacing the lens itself not the drive.they infact have ribbon cables.yea the drive is super easy
