Hi i have been reading for days about this method, im going to buy a soldering iron today but i dont think i can just go and buy the required components is there anything i can destroy like a motherboard or tv for a zener 5.1v diode and two 4k resistors or eight 1k resistors. i dont have a multimeter either and probably wouldnt understand it if i did. im sure i could setup the wiring from the serial am i right in that theres just three wires need attaching to the xbox LPC header only. i have two xboxes i just destroyed a second by hotswapping i used xplorer 360 to try and get a save game exploit to disk. it crashed now i have error code 7 and now i have blank screens on boot i want to build a new dash from an 80GB drive i need the eeprom any help much appreciated!
Zeners are pennies bought online, as are the rest of the components. The zeners are in the circuit as voltage limiting devices. If you use the wrong ones... say 12v, you will fry the eeprom. If you can't source the parts and haven't ever built any electronics before I would strongly suggest buying one from chunkhead. His are well made and fairly priced.
I did look on ebay there was only one for sale in total it was £15 far to much im going to try and source the parts first ive been doing some practice on desoldering from old useless electronic items. the zener diodes limit the voltage to a maximum of 5v i believe. does the serial port give a voltage output? why could i not just use a 5v dc power supply like an old usb to run power through the chip for the serial to read? if anyone can think of a more non specific component method please tell me. Im close to trying the SDram swap but i think my old SD boards are all dead. microsoft has just made it difficult to swap and repair old/dead xbox hardware. :{
It's no harder to work on than any other "it breaks throw it away" modern microelectronics. The zeners are there because the serial port throws out 12v on the sda/sdb rails. Do maplins still do mail order and have the parts? Exact parts aren't critical, only the zeners seem critical, along with the wire lengths. (If not then send me a PM and we can work something out.. I know a couple of small independent component suppliers)
Thanks for the links im close to ordering from maplin im just waiting for a deposit to clear on paypal i couldnt see any postal order option and i only have a tsb savings account wasnt sure if i could use the card online.

Those are wrong.. the reisitors need to be 3K9 (or 3.5k in old money).. 3500 ohms. The ones you have listed are 3.9 ohms. I used 5w carbon composition (from an old valve radio) for mine.. it's the value not the wattage. Min Res 3k9 M3K9 7034 0.13 http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=M3K9&DOY=28m4 The zeners are fine..just watch the polarity on the zeners and the lead length. I had a few problems with rf looping or some sort of instability with mine which I cured with a couple of 0.0001µf ceramic disk capacitors between the sda/sdb lines and ground. They shouldn't be needed.. and I'm a perfectionist. probably just an artifact from an unshielded old PC without a case and lead lengths.

I couldnt get maplin paypal to work so i bought some off ebay BZX55C5V1 X 10 ZENER DIODE BZX55C5V1 3.9 ohm carbon resistors x 10 1/4 watt 5% tolerance i dont know if they will work?
Resistors are wrong again. I did actually post the component number earlier with a link to the page. Don't use those. you will fry your eeprom... 3K9 3.9K 3900 ohms. You have 3.9 ohms. way too small by a factor of 1000 (the value isn't that critical.. 3k5 to 4k5 will be close enough) The zeners are perfect (and good quality BZX is a Mullard numbering system)
1 step closer im going to go to a small tv repair shop close by and see if they have some resistors also check colour codes from some stuff like psu's and mobo's etc
