I just got a used Xbox and want to mod. I've been reading around and all I've found are ridiculously over-priced modchips and shotty softmod instructions. I think it would be quite easy to simply format a hard drive as FATX and somehow copy an image of the modded dashboard and anything else it needs right onto the drive. Does anybody know of software that will do this?
Most modchips are 30-60 bucks, how is that ridiculously overpriced? A new top notch xbox title will cost you 50 bucks. Once you have all the required items for softmodding, it's [bold]very[/bold] easy to softmod. I'm thinking that your not willing to put in the effort or the small ammount of money necessary to get the job done or your scared that your xbox will end up being a large ugly paper weight. Sure you could, but it wouldn't work in your xbox. Xbox hdd's are locked to the mb and if you just put a new hdd in, it won't have the unlock code to access the new hdd.
It seemed logical that you could simply format the hard drive and softmod that way, I'm actually quite new to Xbox modding. As for the modchips being overpriced, I just purchased one for $90 CDN, that's quite a bit of money for a small piece of breadboard and $10 worth of electronics. Although relative to purchasing software titles, it is very much worth the $90 and I see that now. And I'm too lazy to mod my Xbox, I did it with my PS2 a few months back, I'm just totally new to it as I only got my Xboxes last week. It's very doubtful, but if one of them dies during modding, it's alright because I got one for free from work (after fixing it) and another from eBay for $30 (the seller assumed it was broken... it wasn't).
