I am using this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203286 tutorial and made it to step 4, after I enter the xboxhd command and I am getting an error message saying

"This script assumes /dev/hda is the device to be used for creating or rescueing an xbox harddrive No disk found on /dev/hda (primary master)!

Shotdown, connect a driver and reboot.
    root@xbox-hdm:/2"

I am using a laptop with an external case to try and mod a 250gb WD HD. I have tried all the settings on the back of the HD, but I keep getting the same error message.

    Any ideas?

Anybody know how to set it to a primary master drive? I tried moving the jumper to all the pins, but still same error.

Not sure about this one but i'll give it a shot! Did you remove the laptop's HDD before you dicided to do this? By default, you should only have the xbox HDD and the new HDD you want connected to the pc or laptop. The only way I can foresee doing it on a laptop is to have some sort of network boot thru 1394 firewire or usb. Even, then the laptop would have to be able to read from a secondary source with only the bios loaded. From what I know, the laptops will only boot and read from one HDD from a straight Bios boot. I reccomend finding someone who will let you use a desktop.

Yeah, I removed the HDD from the laptop. I did everything just life that posts says. Everything was fine until midway through the 4th step.I guess finding a desktop seems like to only option to fixing this.
