hi i'm having trouble connecting to xbox live or even setting up an account. i just bought a 12 month sub and am following the instructions from the website but i keep getting the message "could not connect to xbox live" it then takes me to a checklist screen in the help page where the check cable option has a cross next to it. i have tried a straight and a cross over ethernet cable but i still cant get past this stage. i have allowed ics on my internet settings but no joy. please can someone help.

what set up do you have. Is it strait to the PC or is it through a router?
What type of firewall are you running?
I do not know the answer as i never use Xbox Live. But in order for anyone to help you there needs to be much more information provided.

Plus me posting will bump the thread back to the top for others to see.

if you want to see your IP and DSN information on the PC, go into where your networks are set up and right click on the internet connection you are using. Then choose status, and click on the support tab at the top. This will show the IP address, Default gateway and DSN address that need to be entered into the Xbox. The IP address should be one number above what the PC has.
    Like if PC is 192.168.1.100
    Xbox would be 192.168.1.101
the Default Gateway and DSN addresses would be the same for both.
It also make a big difference weather you have the Xbox set up as static yes or no in the Xbox setting
if your IP address on the PC is static then it should be set to yes
If it is DHCP then it should be set to no
also there is a setting to enable the network on the xbox around the same place as all the above things which you need to make sure you have enabled

if you know all this already i apologize for repeating it

thanks for the re0ply but i am not good with this type of thing. i looked for the ip adress where you said but when i went in there was a server ip add and a client ip add. i didnt see anything about dsn or gateway info. also on the xbox ive looked through all the settings and cant find one for static ip adds.

The best thing for you might be to just go and buy a router. I have always had good experiences with linksys routers. Then your xbox can connect directly to the internet through the router. If you get a router, just leave all the settings on automatic in the Xbox.
