I have a softmodded xbox i have had the xbox for about 2/3 years, i have changed the power button light and added a ring LED in where the Jewel used to be its been fine until now. I can start it up perfect a game/dash but after 5/10mins (max) it turns off the xbox fan is still going and the power button is flashing also the CPU Grill is very hot unless thats normal. I dont have a mod chip or changed my hard drive nothing like that the wires are all plugged in there is a small indent in the gray wire connected to the hard drive going to the DVD drive and then to the motherboard can anyone HELP ASAP please (sorry if posted in wrong area i am new)

CPU or GPU is overheated. That is why the xbox turned off after 5 mins.

I have seen fix this problem before. YOu can open the xbox and turn on xbox. look and feel the heat to know where the heat comes from. The big heatshrink is the CPU, the smaller is GPU. Determine which one get overheat.

TO fix this problem, you can take off the heatshrink. Then clean up the old heat compound on both the chip and heatshrink. Then apply a new heat compound and put the heatshrink back.

yea, thats a serious problem man. just use your dashboard to monitor where the heat is come from.

Id use XBMC, it'll show you both the cpu/gpu temps. see what the problem is and then take it from there. So get a new XBMC and go into the system info. (click on the power button on screen, then go 1 too the right.)

    Dont play any games.

This is funny. I broke the heatsink fan on my xbox so i had to mcguiver up me a solution, know what is was/is? A spoon! lol, i'm serious. i broke the clamp, so i broke off the end of a spoon jammed it between the heatsink and harddrive case. the case pushed it down keeping pressure. lol no joke. My CPU runs at 42C so it pretty good. I also use this if your interested.

You can get it at Tigerdirect for like 6 bucks.

Thanks for the info i am now going out to buy some heat compound i have found the source of the heat its coming from the heatsink i cant touch it after its been on its that HOT. After i have removed the old compound and added new on the chip and grill will it fix the turning off problem. Thanks

Im not sure that that is going to fix the problem for you. The xbox is designed not to overheat on stock cooling, so if it is there is an issue with the xbox. Im not sure what though. On some of the older xboxs new power cords where being given away free, as the originals had overheating problems. The xbox only shuts off by itself when the temp goes over like 75C i think, so like i said befor, there is something wrong with your box. So, a couple of suggestions for you here.

Do the compound. (make sure to read the directions and follow them exactly)

Do a fan mod, to make your fan run at 100%. (its loud but you'll get used to it)(i'll look and give you a link to the directions, all you do is plug the fans cables into the HDD connector)

Make sure not to put your xbox in an enclosed place, it needs fresh air. if you keep it in an enclosed place its sucking the hot air back in that it blows out.

So ya, do the compound and fan mod, but if that dont work you may need a new xbox. :( Cause it could be the power supply aswell. you can buy xbox parts online but theres no point if you dont know what part is causing the problem.

I removed the CPU Grill and removed the current thermal paste from the Grill and CPU replaced with brand new paste worked like a dream. My current temp is.... 31.00 C fan speed is 5x faster than normal.
