Which of these 2 approaches would you recommend as more suitable for dvd backup, considering the final video quality and staying as close as possible to the original source?

    1. (MPEG Quantization Matrix) + (no B-frames)
    or
    2. (CQM such as Sharktooth's HR, UHR or 6of9) + (B-fames 1/1/1 or 2-1-1)

As the compression ratios are similar (actually for MPEG is lower) and both final encodes are satisfying

    Any information is welcome.

DVD backup means, think , 'DVD to AVI' and not vice versa.

My suggestion is to us the way suggested in http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/ (DVD to AVI, guide for 16:9 movies) that is:
    [bold]If your source is a DVD [/bold]
    - rip the DVD
    - create a D2V from the VOB set which compose the DVD's movie (remember: VTS_#_0.VOB are menus, not movie. Movies usually range from VTS_#_1.VOB to VTS_#_5.VOB (5 is for DVD5, DVD9 can have a higher number than 5, VOB files are 1 GB large).
    - load the D2V with VirtualDub + the suggested plugin which helps it to load D2V files, select 'Xvid multipass' selecting a bitrate such the movie fits into 1 (2 for 'perfect quality' CD-R) (use VirtualDub's internal bitrate calculator, from the window which appears whan you make Video__Compression____Xvid).
    [bold]If your source is a movie[/bold]
    - load the movie with VirtualDub and configure a Xvid compression milti-pass. Add some filter (like Resize, Null Transform or De-Interlace) if needed.
    - save (you need to perform two passes, read the guide).

    Read the guides....

i stumbled upon a great little program called fair use , it is a
very impressive dvd conversion app which will do almost all formats .

they have a free version that works wonderfully , i use anydvd and dvddecrypter to rip to a iso file then open the iso with fair use and converted to mpeg4 , it took about 1 hr useing 1gig of ram and a p4 3ghz crappy emachine .

fair use will let you import from all file formats not just iso , that just happens to be my favorite .

im sure you could open the disc directly up through fair use as long as you had anydvd running in the background , i always rip with anydvd running in the background and dvddecrypter it seems things move fatser when i rip the disc to the hdd rather then trying to convert directly from the disc itself .

ive never used a app quite like this , its built in wizard makes it very easy to use for those of us who have no idea what the heck were doing , and has many extra features for those who like to play .

i am useing the lite version which is the free version , it never experies and is well worth the few megs of space it takes up on my drive , its also free of malware , the difference between the paid version vs free is dualcore encoding and mp4 encoding , for those of you with two proccessors this little app would spit a flawless 700 meg avi out very quickly .

for those of you still useing gordian you must check this little app out as im sure your going to fall in love with it as i did !!
