   I've noticed that with FFDshow the picture is a little grainier compared to XviD. Has anyone else seen this, or am I imagining things?

   did you turn on ffdshow postprocessing ?
   
   if you want to use xvid decoder from ffdshow, select xvid in the codec option for ffdshow
