I apologize in advance if this has been asked before. I have spent the last 2 days looking through past posts and guides to find some help but I just can't quite find what I am looking for.
I have some DVDs that I want to combine to one DVD with some kind of menu system, even if it's not fancy. Yesterday I used Shrink and Extractor and was able to burn Toy Story 1 & 2 on one disk and it works great but it is kind of a hassle to get to the second movie. I have roxio (which I am having NO luck with at all), Ulead DVD Workshop 2, Shrink, Extractor, Alchohol 120%, TMPGE DVD author (again, no luck), and I will have Nero. There has to be a way to combine 4 short dvd's (only about 30-40 minutes) each with some kind of menu. Thanks in advance!

    Jodi

do you mean you want to rip DVD movies of DVD Discs and combine them?

or you have some files in mpeg format and you want to combine them - a little bit more detail about your DVDs is needed man

I want to take 4 seperate DVD disks, encode and compress them, and then combine them onto one DVD with a menu.

    Hi JodiBelle,

Welcome to AD. Concerning Roxio, you have the right idea about tossing it. Prior to installing Nero you will need to uninstall Roxio, and clean it from your system completely. Here is a utility to do this.

    http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip

Afterwards, you can install Nero 6. Here is a link to download for $49 USD. You can also use Nero's free trial, but it does have some limitations.

    https://www.eagletronics.com/index2.htm

I believe you will be able to do what you want with Nero, but there are others that will post here with that info.

you can use that software - rip all 4 movies to mpeg files, then load them up into a program like Tmpegenc DVD author and make a DVD with a menu

but bear in mind the quality might not be very good

what are they btw? - just out of interest

Hey Doc, thanks for the welcome, the Roxio advice, and the uninstaller thing. I have heard people rave about Nero for so long and now I can see why! I never was crazy about Roxio and for DVD burning, forget it I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to make a menu on Nero though.
Loner, that MPEG thing takes a while. It worked out ok but I can't figure out how to get one of the bonus things that is on the DVD to work. Oh yeah, they're exercise DVD's. I have a sick compulsion with those.

    JodiBelle...
I missed the part about wanting to create your own menu. I don't believe that is part of Nero's capability beyond what you see in VisionEspress2.

As LoNeR points out, TMPGEnc DVD author is a good choice. I don't know how much re-authoring you want to do in the future (?), but you could do a 30 day free trial of a couple of the more user-friendly programs offered by Ulead like
    DVD MovieFactory3
    http://www.ulead.com/dmf/trial.htm
    and VideoStudio8
    http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm

PS. I'm wondering if your "sick compulsion" with exercise videos is contageous? If so, I'd like to catch some of that!!!

JodiBelle, welcome to AD, You want to use Nerovision Express to create a menu. You can then preview your "menu" with a remote control in the program and go back and change anything you want. You can then burn out of that program.

You will have to first rip your files to your HD 1st, you can use shrink or decrypter for that. Then add them one by one in NVE(nerovision express). Create chapters and menu and burn.

One final note, NVE cannot reauthor, the files will have to be under 4.3 when totaled before going into NVE. You can do that with Nero recode or with shrink when you rip.

Be sure to get rid of roxio, nero and roxio fight like cats and dogs, doc is right on about that!

One other thing, dvdlab is a very good program, it is not for beginners and it costs 99.00, NVE is included in the nero package and will do what you want.

    good luck!!!!

    Hi big-O...

So, for talking purposes, lets say each DVD was about the same size. You would then run each through recode to get something like a 1 Gig file each, for a 4 gig total. And then run it through NVE?

Then, when you add the menu...will it then "menu" to each of the menus on each of the 4 DVD's? Or, do these get removed in the process?

PS. Thanks for jumping in here.

@JodiBelle. Nero has a good NVE guide

hey doc, you only want to add the file(movie, exercise, etc.) itself, a menu will be created for all in NVE so that you or she can go to each one.

Ya thinking about exercising? heh heh heh.

@ JodiBelle ... I need to ask bigorange question here. If you still need more info, or want more info on what follows, please jump in.

@ big-O ... I remember reading on another thread that you were putting VHS on DVD. Couldn't find it again, though. I had a Pinnacle device that was supposed to do that, but it had synch problems after 15 minutes or so. So I got the Canopus 100, but haven't had time to get it hooked up 'cause of workin' with DRP & RB/CCE (workin' great!!!). Anyway, what is your VHS to DVD process? Any synch problems yet?

Not so far except once I had about a 2 second delay. A lot of old films are on VHS and not DVD. I used to collect VHS til DVD came out. So it's nice to be able to have 'em on DVD, it actually improves the quality somewhat. I play 'em on a cheap VHS player I got at wal mart -35 bucks- and record them to my HD.

I then run the files thru nerovision express and create a menu. I go to all posters. com and download posters from the film and go to mgm, 20th century, etc. sites and get pics from the movie and create my own covers in nero's dvd cover app. That app has a lot of custom stuff you can do in it. I add titles, actors, synopsis of the movie, and assemble it all into a very passable cover.

i had to get a black box to remove macrovision, a lot of them are encrypted-50 bucks. Then I got a video card-65 bucks, all in all, well worth it to add to my dvd collection and back up my VHS. I have some other apps by Ulead I've been wanting to try, haven't got around to it yet.

    Hope this helps, see ya!

Grr,I am getting totally frusturated with this. I ripped with Encryptor in the file mode (read somewhere here that is what you are supposed to do to work with shrink), and then ran them through shrink and saved to an ISO. Nero is telling me that it can't read MPEGs without some extra thing that the Enterprise version doesn't have yet TMPGEnc won't work with it because it is saying that it has to be an mpeg to be valid. What the heck am I doing wrong here? By the way, can you creat chapters in Nero? Just wondering.

Loner, the extra thing that won't work is just a bonus section on the DVD with a short little workout.

Doc, I don't neccesarily need a menu for each movie, just something that lets me pick what movie. If there is a certain chapter I want to get to, I don't mind having to flip a bit. Hey, out of the two Ulead programs you listed, which do you think is better?
And check out P90X if you want some manly exercising without all the hot chicks to distract ya ;O)

Bio, you think DVDlab is hard to use huh?

Thanks for all the answers and advice so far everyone.

    Whhhaaaatttttt?????
What in the world? Are you using shrink or nero? do you mean decryptor? Listen here ya go, you're all over the place using a little bit of everything! Now you're talking ulead and dvdlab,TMPGEnc,lordy, you need to settle down and let's just use a couple of apps, OK?

Nerovision express and nero recode will do all that you need.(decrypter to rip only if encrypted, if not go directly into recode.)

Did you read my post to doc?
[bold]hey doc, you only want to add the file(movie, exercise, etc.) itself, a menu will be created for all in NVE so that you or she can go to each one. [/bold]isn't that what you want?

1-rip with DECRYPTER in file mode to one folder for each DVD.
2-open recode, import dvd, each folder one at a time. Re-author, leaving only the exercise video, set your custom size to one g, and burn to a folder. Label each folder so you know what is where.Put all of them in one big folder so they are all together, easier to keep track of.
3-when you're done in recode, make sure they don't go over 4.3g's and go to nerovision express. Add each folder one at a time til all are in. You can then create chapters, after that create your menu. After that use the software remote to preview and see all is as you want it. If not go back and correct. when done, burn baby burn!

If you don't know how to use nerovision express go to the nero homepage and get the NVE manuel. It is well explained and has pics and all. IF you still have problems, then holler back, OK? good luck!
