u mean me and creaky? firstly,i'm a girl, doesn't really matter. i'm just surfing around, thought I'd go to the safety valve and blabber a bit. it's always fun.
Hey, I also planning to get a new CPU and i read all the post above. I'm still can't decide between a AMD 3200+ athlon 64 or P4 540 3.2 ghz HT. At first was planning amd so i made up a list. Please take a look and comment. Suggestions would be great. O and I plan to OC. Do I need such a power supply? CPU -AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz Socket 939 Motherboard -MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum S-939 nForce4 Ultra 1 PCI-E 16X 7.1 Ch Audio Dual GB Lan IEEE 1394 VIDEO CARD -ATI All-In-Wonder X600 PRO Radeon X600 256MB DDR PCI-Express CASE -Thermaltake Xaser Tsunami VA3000SNA Aluminum Home Theater Tower (Silver-Mirror Coating) -SilverStone SST-ST46F 460W Low Acoustic (Silent) Power Supply w/ Active PFC CPU COOLING -Thermaltake Cooling System CL-P0024 Tower112 Pure Cu Heatsink w/ Heatpipe Cooling Technology (LGA775/P4/K7/K8) OR -Zalman CPU Cooler CNPS7700-Cu Copper-Core Fan Speed Controller Retail RAM -OCZ PC-3200 DDR400 Premier Series 1GB (2x512MB) Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5 (OCZ4001024PDC-K) HARD DRIVE -Western Digital Caviar SATA (WD2000JD) 200GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer
@ kinza, sorry. It's just that there is loads of guys here & very few girls. Makes a pleasant change. Pulsar Safety valve can be fun, can't it?
yeah, i don't really care, that's why I stuck in "doesn't really matter" in my previous post. @Lastdrgn: what are u going to do on the computer? do you ever want to upgrade to xp 64-bit? ddr2 memory?
well i plan to do everything. Video editting, gaming, photoshop and illistrator stuff ..etc As for upgrades probably in the future. Not anytime soon (that is after i get the new computer). By that time i'll probably get a a new motherboard, RAM and CPU. Should i keep the current parts? or will it not work out well? Is OC possible with the current parts or wil it overheat?
Tinker1: 'well sorry to say ppl its gonna be P4 )' Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will...
well amd is cheaper and performs pretty much the same. so intel is maybe slightly better at doing other stuff but not enough of a performance increase to make the increase in cost worth it.
Well, if you're doing video then Intel has a slight advantage over AMD, slight. If you're going to keep parts then I need to know your specs first.
I haven't bought the parts yet cuz i'm wondering if the parts i posted earlier work well together and are overclockable. The motherboard on the list supports dual channel DDR 266/333/400, using four 184-pin. The RAM i plan to get is a daul channel DDR 433. Is the motherboard compatable? Is the setup good for overclocking? O does the clock of he RAM matter alot? The one on the list has a CL of 2.5-3-2-8. Here is the list again: CPU -AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz Socket 939 MOTHERBOARD -MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum S-939 nForce4 Ultra 1 PCI-E 16X 7.1 Ch Audio Dual GB Lan IEEE 1394 VIDEO CARD -ATI All-In-Wonder X600 PRO Radeon X600 256MB DDR PCI-Express CASE -Thermaltake Xaser Tsunami VA3000SNA Aluminum Home Theater Tower (Silver-Mirror Coating) -SilverStone SST-ST46F 460W Low Acoustic (Silent) Power Supply w/ Active PFC CPU COOLING -Thermaltake Cooling System CL-P0024 Tower112 Pure Cu Heatsink w/ Heatpipe Cooling Technology (LGA775/P4/K7/K8) RAM -OCZ PC-3500 DDR433 Enhanced Bandwidth Platinum Edition 1GB (2x512MB) Dual Channel Kit (OCZ4331024EBDCPE-K) HARD DRIVE -Western Digital Caviar SATA (WD2000JD) 200GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer
Yep, all those parts are compatible. If you're doing video-editing you may want to get a DVD burner so you can watch the video on tv. You might also want to get a better video card, the Georce 6600 GT's just had a price drop since the new 7800 cards came out. Here's a good one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814145098 I personally would buy this power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817148008
Maybe an SATA2 hard drive would improve hard drive speed, only by a bit though, might help with video editing.
@ Lastdrgn The card you are getting is not the best in the world. What do you plan to OC? You will not get much out of your card, you CPU is locked @ 2Ghz. so you will not get much joy there then either! Your MOBO is half decent, but can only handle 400 memory, you need to get PC3200 to suit your MOBO better. The mem you have picked is PC3500, I am not sure that you will not have compatibility issues over that. What do you want your PC for? Here is your MOBO http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=637 Pulsar
This memory is fully compatible: Corsair XMS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145450 or something on the OCZ side: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146890 As for the memory you have chosen I noticed some reviews on Newegg with your motherboard that successfullly used PC 3500 memory in their MSI K8N Neo4 mobo, it wasn't OCZ though. OCZ should be compatible, you might want to check with MSI support.
well i'm getting all my parts from this place: http//www.canadacomputers.com I'm not sure what cpu, mobo, mem or video card to get now... plz suggestions would be great. The price is also an issue. Nothing too crazy ex. over $280 Canadian per part.
