Microsoft must have been on crack to have all these different types of DVD drives in their XBOXs. Even the same DVD drive brands work slightly different from each other. The best advice I can give is to see what others are using and have general success with and try them out. Don't get a huge spindle to start, but a small pack.
scot, I have used 2 samsung drives in my xbox (both sdg-605 drives, one which I still have now) and a thomson drive, none played dvd+r, dvd-r played fine however I know of others that have been unable to play dvd+r although dvd+rw play fine my xbox is modded with an xecuter 2.2 lite
but scot like you say, its weird how the xbox is funny with drives and media and so forth I mean the philips and thomson drives have trouble with cdr discs, the samsung drive doesnt, the phips drives , as you say, play the dvd+r but not dvd+rw, my samsung plays dvd-r not dvd+r but does play dvd+rw weeeeeeeeeird btw I use memorex
regarding the program to use, I myself use stomp recordnow to make backups, have found it to work everytime, without having to make any program adjustments etc. I have heard some success stories with nero and some failures, I guess it does depend how you have it set. Disc juggler too is a good program
If I'm using Nero I take it I just drag the .iso file the craxtion programme has created into the box?? And not the whole contents of the D Drive I copied across??
DJboogie. My Phillips reads cd-r too, no problem, i have tried 6 or 7 different kinds and all have worked. And I agree that Record now max is the best program to burn your iso images.
For nero, you close the wizard that pops up, goto file, select burn image, select your iso and burn. I personally recommend record now max, it is much more consistent than nero. Here is a link for a 30 day trial. http://downloads.stompinc.com/files/stpRNM450e_STPD.exe
Yeah just trioed a RW+ and it didnt work so will try Record Now. How easy is it to do?? Does it mean my xbox wont recognise this type of RW+ though as it failed with Nero?? (Also just backed up the game Counter strike and it only came out at 1.6gig? Is that a bit small for x-box game?) Does anyone have a link to a tutorial for burning backups thru Record now max?
Simple all you will have to do is open up record now max, close the wizard that pops up, select the image tab on top, choose your recorder, browse to your iso and select it (you need to click the little pull down to change the extention from gi to iso) then hit burn. That is it. BTW 1.6gigs could be correct. If you question it just redo it and see what the other comes up with and compare the 2. If it comes out 1.6 gigs again then you no you got it. Make sure that you are using flash fxp to transfer your files from xbox to pc. I have tried them all and flash fxp is the best!!!
scot is definately right regarding flash fxp, other ftp clinets dont seem to connect nearly as good, flash fxp connects right away every time, 1.6 gb is fine for xbox games, of course that dont mean its right (gta3 is smaller than 1gb I believe) scot I have heard the philips drive is far superior to the thomson. another good thing to check on is your network setting, rustydog has a great instruction pdf for network connecting, follow this exact, you cant go wrong http://get-modded.com/tutorials/BasicNetworking.pdf when I first tried ftp connecting, I made the error of having the pc as the same ip as the xbox. Duh lol Also make sure when you ftp to the xbox that you drag over each folder from the xbox d:/ (game) one by one, dont copy them all over at once, I find it confuses things and ou sometimes end up with missing files. If you do find games are too big (terminator 3 for instance) then just take out some movie sequences, although the t3 sequences are cool! I havent YET found a game I have problems with, but I hear there are a couple of problem ones out there. If you have a bigger than retail hard drive you can always just copy them right into that instead of a disc. Scot is right though, xbox dvd drives are all differnt, not only with the type of disc, but the make too, I do find the samsung sdg-605 to read anything (brand) I put into it, which is great for putting music into the box from your collection. (cdr) If you follow instructions and "techniques" step by step, and dont rush it, you'll be fine We all probably lost a few discs somewhere down the line. Also its a good idea when you make an xiso (use craxtion it rocks!) to keep the image onto your hard drive, if your hard drive is a big one, I found out the hard way, I backed up my copy of gta vice city, the dog ate my original, and then the copy too got accidently destroyed, I ended up renting it from a video library to get it again (I wasnt doing anything too terrible I mean I had bought it once!!) If you have problems backing up games, pm or email me I will be glad to help if I can
After you have made the udf (xiso) you only need to burn that image you created to disc, if you drag all the files from the xbox to burn, then it wont work, it has to be xiso format for the box to be able to read it (bloody microsoft) Its actually a good way to back up dvd films too (ftp from the xbox hard drive, then use dvd shrink)
Thanks for the info guys - yeah the connection part I have cracked - its just finding the media to make it work. I did copy the folder over all in one, but double checked it and nothing seems to be missing. Now I have to find the disk. How do you know what dvd drive you have btw in your xbox?
Here you can look and see what drive you have here. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index....atstockdvddrivedoihave&view=findpost&p=247188 I can say this, I have used all kinds and types of media. Verbatim and Imation dvd+r and Imation cd-r (700mb) work 100% with my phillips drive. I love my phillips it reads anything but dvd+rw, which is fine with me as I no my back up procedure is correct. I dont even test games on the hard drive anymore I just burn them and I am confident that they will work. I wanna stress that when looking for a dvd that will work to look for a nice dark purple dvd, the lighter shades of peuple tend to not read as good IMO, they sell sample packs so just buy a few different kinds until one works then buy more of those. Just make sure that you have your backup procedure is correct, it will drive you insane after a while if you keep getting dvd's that dont work. I went thru 7 dvd the first time i made a back up only to find out I was not making them right. Use Craxtion, GDF Image, or Qwix to make your iso. Make sure that if your bios is older that you patch the iso for media flags. For this Craxtion works nice, as well as ADR Patcher for removing media protection for games. You dont need to patch games if you are running the x2_4977 or later version, or the Evox M7 bios, the bios will bypass the media checks. Use record now max to burn your iso images it is the best burning software for backups IMO. Good luck and let me no if i can help!
Well I have a Samsung drive folks! That should narrow down my search a bit for media! Cheers for the link Scott.
It worked!!! Managed to back up counter-strike and so far it plays just fine! Only one thing that slightly puzzles me. When I was copying it with Record Now it got to about 70% and said "finalizing disc" then it just went straight to "completed". As I said it works fine but I expected it to crash or something. ps: I'm using cheap Grade A DVD -R and this is what it has worked on. Thanks everyone for your great advice....... I may need some more soon!
