Hello all, I'm new to the BD ripping thing and I'm confused with something.
I'm trying to rip my BD collection to mkv so I can watch them with XBMC.
I started ripping Scrubs season 8 episode 1
I chose 1080p to 720p with a target size of 700mb. Yet it gives me a mkv of around 250mb. I've tried then to increase the target size to 1000mb and it gives me something of about 260mb.
I also tried leaving it as 1080p and it gives me a final mkv of 408mb.
Am I missing something? Is there a way to really choose the final size of the mkv?
    Thanks in advance.

BD RB is not a ripper for that you'll need a copy of AnyDVD HD or DVDfab which is not quite as good but free. BD RB was not made for converting files to Matroska .MKV, however another application by the name of Ripbot264 (no it doesn't rip) will allow for conversion to .mkv. Which you can get for free if you follow this link.

I know it wasn't made for converting files but it does one hell of a job...I have also had the same issues and questions about file size after conversion and the only thing i have found that changes anything is if you select backup as DVD5 .mkv size is between 1-2GB and backup as DVD9 .mkv size is around 5GB. If there is a better way to select target size I would love to hear it, I just don't think there is as much control with that conversion as there is with straight BD-BD backups...Would love to be proven wrong

Hello Sophocles, actually I do already have Any DVD HD. Sorry I should have specified that.
I'll give a try to Ripbot.
One more question for you. Should I be converting to 720p or can I keep it at 1080p if my target size is 700mb knowing an episode is about 20-25 mins? What would give me the best quality?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi! He wasn't looking to backuup to BD 5, BD 9, or even BD 25 or I would've pursued that route since I did start this thread. :>}

He wanted to backup to a well known portable container .mkv or Matroska format which can be used for even smaller files than BD 5 with pretty good results and makes it easier less hefty to stream over a home network. BE RB does't do Matroska (mkv)so I recommended a comparable Matroska capable reencoder that's about as easy as they come. I recommended DVDfab's BD ripper only just in case he didn't have a copy of AnyDVD HD since it's free. As a ripper I would however still recommend AnyDVD HD because it is far superior. For a portable Mpeg-4 part 10 container, it has no equal.

Correct me if you meant something else but BD Rebuilder does indeed convert to mkv files.

If believe that if you read my last post I state that it doesn't.

    And!

I could see however how a type o and an unneeded word could confuse.

It will not only convert to mkv, it also converts to Divx/Xvid, DVD-5, DVD-9, (not just blu-ray burnt onto these blank dvd's but true Video_TS structure).

    Check the alternate outputs. [IMG]

Yes, Deadrum33 beat me to it. It's under alternate output.

So what about my second question: Should I be converting to 720p or can I keep it at 1080p if my target size is 700mb knowing an episode is about 20-25 mins? What would give me the best quality?

I stand to be corrected. I apparently haven't been paying attention to some of the new features. I've not had any issues with BD RB and so I generally keep the same settings because if it isn't broke then why fix it. I began using Ripbot months before jdobbs released BD RB while at the same time I was a beta tester with DiVx for Project RĂ©moulade and never really thought to look for any option. I'll play with it over the holidays and see how it plays out. Thanks guys for clearing that up. Now if you guys would like to help with this thread it would be greatly appreciated. HLG

No problems Soph...as far as helping with the thread, you probably still know more about the inner workings than I do, I just happened to use a certain setting a few times...

This might not make sense, but i wasn't a big fan of the alternate outputs on DVD-RB. I didn't like the process or maybe the output, it's been awhile. anyway I've been very happy with the quality and ease of BD-RB ouputs. I've tested DVD5 output, looked fine, and 720p .mkv looks really nice. You wouldn't think squashing a 40GB Bluray down to a few GB file would be worth watching but it looks good.

No offense taken. I really meant everything that I said. It would be a lot more fun if several members would join in and add their points of view. Without your last post misinformation would've prevailed.

Sounds like a good idea. Don't forget to post your hardware info along with version of Windows or Linux/Wine, movie version with region; IE: processor/speed, RAM, and Hard drive(s).

Just for the heck of it change your working file folder. Rip to Drive E and work back to drive c.
