too little info too late. i already bought this thing. my main concern with this burner is if it will back up my PS2 and DvD's i have. i hate to think i got something that isnt right now that its too late. that sucks. what is "booktyping" ? how important is it?
    thanks.

Pioneers are very fast rippers so you might consider keeping it for ripping and buying a benq or litey for writing. Although the benq's and liteys are bitset ready, you will need some addition free software (at least for the liteys) in order to bitset (lite-on booktype utility or it can be done with dvd decrypter). I think the benq 1650 and 1655 booktype dvd+r media, both SL and DL, to dvd-rom automatically right out of the box. I recommend qsuite for the benq's and smartburn for the litey's. Here's a couple good reads about bitsetting/booktyping http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46559 http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150

You will still need hacked f/w to booktype dvd+r to dvd-rom at least for SL media. As stated before, it might be bitset ready for DL dvd+r media. You could burn a DL dvd+r and then check the booktype with dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to find out for sure.

The f/w you need is called bufallo f/w. Don't confuse dvd-rom booktype with a dvd-rom drive which is just a dvd reader.

You can ask and check here http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=87 for what f/w is needed for your 111. I recommend doing so prior to flashing with any hacked or modified f/w. Sorry I can't help you more but I am not a pioneer man. Let us know how things turn out.

i'm starting to learn more and more. the light bulb is slowly going on. if i am correct :) and i hope so. i need to do the regular old firmware update from pioneer 1.29 if i am right. and after i do that, then i need to use buffalo 1.29 next(which is a mod F/W), but the catch is that it is not out yet. then, when i do get that, i will have bitsetting on my lovely 111D. sound right?

The buffalo f/w is not official pioneer f/w. You will not find it on the pioneer f/w page. Thats why it's called hacked or modified f/w. Go to cd freaks in the pioneer drive forum and they will get you straightened out there. I looked there briefly and apparently there is some hacked f/w available now for the 111 that enables it to bitset/booktype.

thankfully i had already understood what you just typed but didnt relay it properly in my post. the buffalo is on some japanese site that i cant read. lol. i checked out that other site too and found it to be very useful so far. and i now think i understand why bitsetting is so important. just my last question for now then its back to reading about which f/w to use. lol. question is this. do i even need to do the update that pioneer has currently for the 111d. or can i just go str8 to the mod. thanks so much for your patience and information with this newbie.

Either way. It's always a good idea to keep your f/w current. After the flash with buffalo f/w there may not be any more f/w updates that will allow bitsetting/booktyping. I'm just not sure about the pioneer drives and f/w. You would be much better off asking these questions at cdfreaks in the pioneer forum. They have 1st hand experience.
