FWIW in the Feb 17 issue of PC mag page 53, Dvorak LOVES the Gateway AR-230, which is a clone of the Liteon LVW-5001..."highly recommended" in his words. He goes on about how DVD-authoring programs, if you install more than one, can totally screw up your PC so that none of the authoring programs work (they all use the same basic code and .dll's and the different versions of the same named .dll cause mass conflicts)...Dvorak likes the simplicity of the standalone DVD recorder. Sounds like good news on the firmware front with some of us getting beta firmware from Cyberhome. I never had problems with their tech support last year when I RMA'd two CHDVD-500's. Their support was why I was so interested in getting the CHDVR-1500.
Hey daverudy, Consider yourself lucky, indeed. You are, perhaps, one in a thousand who's got a 1500 that supposedly works. This thing is 1st class junk, in my experience with 3 units! Am waiting my RMA replacement, and frankly, don't really expect it to be any better. If it is not right, then down to Wal-Mart she goes.....this time for a full cash refund! Will be interested to hear your report maybe 2 months from now! Try your audio output from the onboard tuner. I bet it is low, just like for the rest of us! This is CyberJunk! renderman
Heads up guys -- new firmware posted now on Cyberhomes website: http://www.cyberhome.com/downloads.asp?Product=1500 . Version: 1229200301U Date: 2/13/04 The prior update was 1/13/04
[bold]Hiya renderman[/bold] was just following these posts about the Cyberhome and noticed you mentioned running a home-base video related biz in your posts. Can you let me in on just what your niche is? If you dont wanna discuss that here email me at foxytrot at hotmail dot com. Thanks! and good luck!
Hello x8dVd, About Pyramid Video.... I run a semi-professional video business. A spare room in my home is my control room. My main niche is producing 30-second commercials for cable broadcast. Next on the list are documentaries, including one for our Local Marine Base, which I have recently finished. Next on the list is editing home cam video for clients (yuk!) I will do weddings, but I hate them, and I keep my prices high to discourage them. Nonetheless, clients will pay my price! For those that want it, I author my videos with DVD Workshop, then burn to DVD-R with my pc burner. I bought the CyberHome to burn my videos in real time Mpeg conversion, but it looks like the reliability and such may prohibit its use for commercial projects. Just my luck, I always have to spend a small fortune to get equipment that satifies my requirements! I had planned to make multiple copies with the 1500.......but? My editing system is non-linear and computer based, using Canopus hardware. Software is Adobe Premiere, RexEdit, Corel Xara, Photoshop, Sound Forge, and others....I run a P4 Windows XP computer. It is one of three pc's I built myself. Two of them are networked. I work with all formats, including DV and Betacam SP. My cameras are both 3-chip DV, with broadcast quality resolution. I had a web page for several years, but seldom got any work from it, so I dropped it. I live in Yucca Valley, CA., which is about 25 miles from Palm Springs. Renderman
Update on the 'new' 2/13/04 posted firmware. It's not new. After updating, checking version number in Setup it's the same 12/29/03 version available since January. Bad news for my 1500; it's starting to report disc errors on some DVD -R's I'd burned on my PC. These same discs played fine last week in the 1500. By 'same' I mean I tried to watch a movie I'd watched last week that had played fine...now I'm getting a disc error. I've been home recuperating from surgery this week and have been watching a lot of DVD's on the 1500. I theorize my actually using the unit for extended periods has burnt it out because it operates at what I consider to be too hot of a temperature. It's going back to Walmart by this weekend (when I'm feeling up to getting out of the house). I'm going to order the Liteon 5001 from CompUSA and take my chances on that model. Good luck to all that try and stick out the Cyberhome 1500.
Just keep in mind CompUsa will charge you 15% if you open the box and want to return.. And they will mail you a check for the rest in about 10 days their refund policy stinks...
Yeah, CompUSA's return policy stinks. The main reason I never buy anything with moving parts from them. I may just pass altogether on a DVD Recorder for the time being. Wait 6 months until they're more widely available. CompUSA will never be a major electronics player with their restrictive return policies.
I just bought the Cyberhome 1500 and so far so good. I was wondering if someone can tell me how to have chapters auto-added every 5 mins when I'm recording. I have been able to add markers manually but can't figure how to do it automatically like the manual says you can. The instructions are probably staring me in the face but I can't find them. Thanks in advance.
hey koolbrew...push "setup" on the remote...scroll down to "record mode"...press "enter"...scroll to "auto chapter"..press "enter"...scroll to "on"...press "enter"...press "setup" to exit
gys and gals I have Replay TV and would like to copy from it to my cyberhome dvd? Is this possible? Replay says you can only copy to a VCR. There must be a way around this with a different hook up or something
CyberHome DVR 1500 Update: Got my 3rd Wal-Mart unit repaired by RMA to CH WOW! Now my unit is great!!!!! Low output from tuner is fixed. 12/24 hour clock option (new) NO SKIPPING or STUTTER +R/+RW discs play in my Sony NS300 player! I am a happy camper!
I just baught a DVR 1500 2 days ago at Wally world and I must say that it has been everything that I expected..SO FAR.I have recorded 4 dvd's so far, 2 with dvdrw and 2 with dvdr disc, all will play in my son's PS2 and on my daughters Hitachi dvd/vcr combo player. After I baught it I did a search on google for Cyberhome dvd recorders and found this forum with a thread about it and it almost gave me stomach cramps when I started reading it.Thaught I had wasted my money but so far it is working as advertised but I do wish the clock setting was not in military time and when you put it on standby you would not have to do all of the remote key punching to get back into live mode.Oh well,I guess it aint too bad because I do get exceptionally good play back from recordings and store baught dvd's.I am satisfied if, it will hold up I will be even more satisfied. roothead.
Renderman: Your RMA experience sounds like a good one. Interesting that your new unit is not in military 2400 hours time. What is the firmware version? I returned mine last week after it started acting up, giving 'disk errors' on discs that previously played fine. I'm interested in finding out if they hooked you up with newer, better firmware.
What exactly is the problem with military time? I like it. I used to set my VCR recording time wrong all the time. I would set 9:00AM instead of 9:00PM. With military time, that isn't going to happen. Unless you can't add or subtract 12 from a number.
For me, the military time only 'feature' added to the already overly complicated programming process of the 1500. Face it: the timer function was an afterthought on the 1500; it's main purpose is to do attended/live recording (i.e. live shows, backing up stuff off a camcorder or Tivo, etc...). Still interested in Renderman's firmware version. Also wondering if the new unit runs any cooler?
Cyberhome has got a new firmware upgrade for the 1500 on their home page.I upgraded the firmware as well as the servo firmware and it now gives you the option of selecting 12 or 24 hour clock settings.Seems like they are definatly working on their problems. So far so good.I did make a coaster out of a dvd+r disc this weekend.I had set the timer to record and left the unit on and not in standy,I then switched the unit to standby when it started flashing to switch it to standby.I then turned it back on and it read the disk and formatted again, got an error right off the bat.Now the disk will not format, read or any thing.Do not do what I described above or you will end up with a coaster.Hope this helps someone. Rebel...
Hey roothead, thanks for the heads up on the firmware upgrade. I hope it fixes a few minor problems I still have with the 1500.
