Been gone and busy. Now have time to address the thread. Willspcs Actually with a little research and following the link I provided, it isn't that much of a ripoff, unless you paid too much. If you are able to activate the program, then that activation is good for the later versions of the ripper software, even the RF if you could get a copy. Even without the ripper, the RF version of Platinum is the superior one. The 4.0.3.8 is still downloadable from certain sites. The programs are useless without activation. However if your activation is good, you should have no problem. Concerning Linux and other things of the ilk; I don't tie myself to a system to be rebellious. The Windows system, as you know, dominates the market. Most of the good programming is set up for it. I may not always follow the beaten path, but I like to partake of the advantages afforded by the mainstream systems. BTW, when getting ripped off on EBay, one alternative is sometimes the Postal Inspector's Office, surprisingly a strong law enforcement agency that doesn't mind handling the cases. With them, the theft is only a part of breaking Federal law, mail and wire fraud are in question. @wensteph Copy2 is superior to Shrink 3.2. For the price it should be. It is on a par with RB/CCE at lower compression and its one of the fastest transcoders around. The shortcoming of Copy2 is with older movies and scratched discs. The high contrast of the program exaggerates faults in the old stuff; i.e. flash and spots. I use Recode2 for the old movies. Similar to Shrink, but with better controls. Rumor has it that the author of Shrink went to work for Nero. Just a rumor... Anyway, I find the picture provided by Shrink turns out a bit 'softened' in comparison to other transcoder programs. As far as RB/CCE, when the compression starts going over 20 to 25% you will get the better quality with this program setup. All one needs it the $58 CCE Basic and RB and a few more free odds and ends. Then of course a nice editing tool like DVDRemake Pro is handy, more bucks. With RB/CCE, set up the batch program and go to bed or spend some time doing something, the PC is busy for a while. It is best, if one wants to invest, to have programs that will handle different recording needs. My choices are RB/CCE when one wants to take the time and have superior quality, Copy2 for great quality and fast speed, and Recode2 to dependably handle my older movie recoreding needs. Shrink 3.2 is an excellent choice for those just getting started and learning. No cost startup and good results. The program gives the user the ability to record while learning some of the more involved aspects of recording. It also gives time to learn and make more intelligent choices in retail software.
