Well here is the news. Tried three 4xDVD's in the sampler pack as follows: Ritek Unbranded 4x - Wrote at 2x Datawrite Yellow 4x (G03) Wrote at 2x Memorex 4x (g04 dye?) Wrote at 4x !! I can hardly believe it 50 4x DVD's later and I finally burn one at 4x - pity it is the most expensive !!! I am off to save up some pennies to buy the a tub of Memorex's Cheers David
I use Traxdata (4x) disks and I haven't had one problem so far and have burnt about 25 of them. I have flashed my 10A to a 500 and put the latest 500 fw on from Sony. So far it has performed flawlessly and both Nero and Ulead report 4x writing on+/-R.
just bought a DW-U10A (but not fitted yet) and a five pack of Memorex 1x-2.4x DVD-RW, anyone used them? what firmware used? what are they like? are they as good as memorex or ritek DVD-+R?
hi i'm french and i have a question. the firmware 1.1e of dwu-10a works with the european verion of the dvd recorder?? sorry for my bad english language lol
Does anyone know anything about the Sony DWU-14A? Seems to have the same spec as the Sony DRU-510AX (4X) Is it a better buy than the DRU-10. Price is only a littel more.
Holy smokes - it worked. I was freaked for a bit there though...I tried the approach to convert the firmware on my DW-U10A drive to DRU-500A. (http://type-ive.hp.infoseek.co.jp/files/DW-U10A_to_DRU-500A.zip) What happened? Windows rebooted, both prior to the update, and just after the update (as the program indicated it should). But after that, it rebooted two more times as it was detecting the new hardware. I though I was shafted for sure...but the third time I just waited for a bit before logging in, then it worked fine (WinXP by the way). I then downloaded and installed the latest DRU-500A firmware (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm - now 2.0f), and same thing... After all that, I was able to burn DVD+R at 4x. Why is all this trouble worthwhile? Well...now I can burn at 4x instead of 2.4x with both DVD-/+R. On top of that, I can also use the latest firmware upgrades published by Sony. BTW...following this example, I found the latest firmware for my DVD-ROM, and was able to make it read DVD+R as well as DVD-R. I am quite happy today. Good luck to the rest of you.
Hi All new here. Iv updated my Sony DWU-10A toSony DRU 500A 2f and also cant write at 4X. Im using Datawrite that are Ritek showing 4x. My nero is showing 4x but takes 30min last burn took 33min. Cant say iv noticed any difference in updating. I think its out of order selling a 4X writer that writes at 2x. My liton CDR-W burns at what ever speed I sellect. Its taking nealy 2 hours to rip using DVD Shrink 2.3. In total 1h 30min per DVD-R if im lucky._X_X_X_X_X_[small]Dan.[/small]
Hi, I too have the same problem. It would appear that the DVD Writer just can't cope with a great variety of DVD-R dyes. For what it is worth I have used about 50 4x and only got 2x performance ! The ones to go for that do work are Memorex 4x and any 4x that uses a G04 dye which is a dark purple. Hope that helps Cheers David
Iv been holding back for some time on geting a DVD burner as I thought they had not got the DVD burning totaly sorted out to a good standard. I saw this burner that seemed to meet my expectations, Hmmm I think I should have waited a bit longer?
Hi, Have also got the 4x burning issue, under nero(5.5.10.35) the dw-u10a says it burn at 4x but take 30mn to do a 4.5Go compilation (data) so 2x in real time. Is somebody is using the 80-pin IDE cable as recommended by sony for this kind of burner. see here: http://sony.storagesupport.com/cgi-...Q3qEl6QUyS3HoBEjBYkqP5IfLIfGtSM/faq/view/672) Did u notice an improvement using this wire instead of a normal 40pin? In the device manager, what do u get for ur ide channel. Using a 40 pin IDE cable i get my Secondary IDE channel (burner in Master) with a UDMA 2 transfer mode. Could be interesting to compare these informations... thx
Im using a standard 40 pin IDE cable didnt see the point in getting a 80 pin cable for a ATA 33 device. Iv had mixed opinions, one shop told me I need a ATA 133 cable for my Writer but sony when I rang them told me any IDE cable will be fine and wont make any difference in speed getting a 80 Pin IDE cable.
Hi, no difference at all with a 40 pin cable or an 80pin. The only way the Sony will burn at 4x isa if you use the "right" discs ie ritek G04 dye seems to be the one most people recommend and I had it burning at 4x with a memorex disc. Good luck David
Well just to through the 80 pin IDE cable theory out the window I have got one today and changed Nero to v6 and it dont make a slight bit of difference, it took 30:33min again! I have been using Ritek disks they are Datawrite DVD-Rs 4X. When I rang sony they said that they cant Guaranty that their drives will write at 4x unless you use the bundled software that came with the drive. The disks iv been burning are quality media and are made by ritek, I think ist a drive batch problem. It seems on this forum that either you have a good one or a bad media sensitive sony drive. Im not happy at all. My original firmware was 1.1d can I have the link please to resore to this firmware if avalible so I can send this dive back and perchase a quality drive.
Do u have issues when u use cds too? I just tried to make a compilation of divx, I needed to take the data back from some cds. The drive take very long to transfert the data to the HD (says 15mn or so) and sometimes it does not even finish the work because he find a " crc redundancy error" (something like that). These divx have been burned with a Samsung combo (cdrw/dvd) in 48x and work perfectly the medias used are noname cds. Not happy about this drive too! too slow!
I hvent tryed the CDR yet as I use my reliable Liton for that, I do know that when I use my liton the recording light on the drive stays on throughout the burn process while the DVDR light goes on and off every 2 sec in time with the HD light. The sony drive takes upto 1:20min to extract a dvd using DVD srink.
Not sure if anyone has used this before but iv downloaded a program called DVDinfo this shows a large amount of info on the media and the drive. Iv been using Datawrite DVD-Rs and they show as Ritek G4, still only 2x. heres the link. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/index.php
I tried dvdinfo just to do a dvd speed test. It doesnt go faster than 2x using a movie or backup dvd...it should go at 8x?
Found some interesting tests on the dr-u500a see there: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/print/sony-dru-500a.html Apparently the dvd data transfer rate is 2x so no issues for this and for the previous CD issue the dw-u10a needs to have his Digital CD audio device disabled in device manager to prevent "crc redundancy errors". I upgraded to DR-u500a now and at least, it works fine even with the digital cd audio enabled. Did not try to burn at 4x on -R media yet with this new firmware...wait and see.
Have come across some interesting info on another forum about using Liteon f/w for the sony DRU-500A (DW-U10A). With someone claiming to have his 4X writing fixed ...maybe worth looking into ...heres the link .... http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=17675
Thanks for the tip midland45. I followed your link, read the thread and thought 'what the hell'. I downloaded the patch and guess what - it worked. I wrote 4.5gb of data to a cheapo Mirror disk in approx 15 mins. After three months of pratting about trying to get my DW-U10A to write -R format at 4X speed, it can finally do it. My writer started out as a DW-U10a, then it changed to a 500a and now it thinks it's a Lite-on LDW-400D. I'm sending it for therapy next week but hey, who cares.
