    Hi Guys,
Just a thought when I spoke to Pinnacle they directed me to a beta version update on their site, version 8.7.14, which resolves a lot of the issues with compatibility with XP, I have been using this for 6+ weeks now with no probs yet apparent.

    Hi Guys,
I've been monitoring this forum and threads as I am awaiting my Sony DWU-10A (£170 blankdiscshop.co.uk).
I hope I don't have any problems like the one's I've been reading.
Will let you know what happens when it arrives.

Can anyone help me to flash my DW-U10A back from the DRU-500A firmware to the original one.
I have the original firmware, but updater will not update it becaus it is not recognized as a DW-U10A, but as a DRU-500a.

I have Pinnacle Studio 8 and upgraded to the last version. I have created a DVD movie of my captured home video. Studio 8 was after the compiling job ready and the status was telling me that the disc was ready. When i took a look at the DVD writer it was still burning. I waited for 30min. untill the light was off. I think there is a delay in the status of Studio 8 and the actual burning time.

I use the Philips DVD+RW discs with my Sony DW-U10A with firmware 2.0f of the DRU-500A.

I also took a look in Nero (5.5.10.35) and the Philips DVD+R could be written with 4 speed :)

    Greatings,

    7thsense

Thanks for that info about 30 ,ims to finish burning. Were you burning an mpeg2 file or an AVI file?

It was captured as an AVI-file. This file is used when i selected the fragments. After this i created the movie, i choose the last option called disc.

Note: look at settings, i had this on cdrom, when i added a DVD the software was telling me that there was bad media added. I changed this setting to DVD and everything worked fine.

Thanks 7thsense. If you are still with us Ronan did you ever get VOB and IFO files written on the DVD, thats all I get when the program has theoretically finished in the proper manner.

Thanks Ronan. I`m using Sony gold £30 for five and they don`t seem to havea problem writing the disc, my problem is WHAT they are writing, not how! ( or not writing in my case.) Pinnacle writes out IFO and VOB files on the DVD but not mpeg files by name from the program. Try to play these files through Windows Media Player and it bombs as unable to read the files. The error msg says get a proper decoder, so I get the Cyberlink one recommended by Microsoft and they still come up with the same error 0xC00D116a. Bitch isnt it. I tried to unravel the MS suport system and like the OOZALUM bird disappeared up my own tail pipe in a puff of guff, feathers, and confusion!

Hello again, Well my Sony DWU10A turned up and I tried to copy 3Gb of date to a Datawrite -rw, using Nero 5.5.10.28. Nero refused to write the lead out then refused to format the disk (either quick/slow). Had to use DVD Decrypter to finally format. Any ideas? Using XP Pro and latest Aspi drvs.

Ronan, Omonguru, et al. Problem solved Sony DVD DW U10A working perfectly with Pinnacle Studio 8 in Windows XP. Problem proved to be:-
    1) Bonehead, ( me ), didnt realise that a VOB file was an MPG 2 file transcribed for the writing process on the DVD. It is simply the video file. Mpg by another name.
    2) Nothing in the Pinnacle manual advises you that when searching the disc looking for the mpeg file, ( as a newbie ), that the VOB file is it.
    3) The Toshiba set tob box DVD player S210EB which I was using to `prove` the disc, after being told it would play anything except RAM, in fact will not play files on +R or +RW disks
    4) Extensive testing in company with my retailer proved that TDK, Verbatim, Discwrite, and several unbranded discs all wrote without a problem.
    5) Re loading Windows XP, was caused by windows demonstrating a fault in the software which in fact was caused by a defective keyboard when the machine was started.
    6) New Keyboard, reload WindowsXP, load Pinnacle Studio 8 v:4.16, update to v: 8.5.21, test shots on several discs all -R and -RW and it all worked perfectly. Toshiba S210EB played all OK My apologies to any experts aboard, if this is a bore, but it may help someone else who is facing an intractable problem with this type of situation. Now to apologise to Pinnacle Tech support who have really tried hard to help, from 8000 miles away.

Larion, does the drive light blink continuously as if it is trying to access the durned disc?

If so then you probably got it set up wrong. Check the jumpers.

Does the 'puter recognize the drive at all?

Can someone tell me the difference between the DRU-500A and the DW-U10A? Why should I buy the DRU-500A instead of the DW-U10A?

The DW-U10A is OEM, most likely sony will NOT support it. Although mine did come with a 1 yr manufacturer's warranty, I believe it was from the OEM, and not sony, although I can not be sure. It doesn't look as nice as the DRU and has a somewhat less desirable software bundle. Other than that, they're the same. So much so you can update the U10A to a DRU with a firmware update. If they're the same price then get the DRU, but for me the difference was $80, so I just picked up the U10A.

And I heard some problems with a few media types it couldn't read/write. Are these bugs over yet that anybody knows? I want to buy the writer for burning home made movies and maybe backup of some digital photographs.
