Creaky and flip im sorry i was supposed to say my secondary ide channel instead of my secondary drive

(I tried that out and my secondary drive which is my DVD writer was set to)

    I meant secondary ide channel

    Device 0
    Device type: Auto detection
    Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2

    Device 1
    Device type: Auto detection
Transfer mode: DMA if available <==(This was set to PIO mode also)
    Current transfer mode:pIO Mode

My primary ide is set like this

    Device 0
    Device type: Auto detection
    Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

    Device 1
    Device type: Auto detection
    Transfer mode: DMA if available
    Current transfer mode:DMA Mode

@stephen13 - i'm a tad puzzled and slightly rusty on my DMA modes. Your hard drive & dvd writer are at DMA modes 5 and 2 respectively, that's spot on.

However i've just checked my home PC and both my 'empty' devices show -

    Transfer mode: DMA if available
    Current transfer mode: Not Applicable

-same as my work pc. Which from my rusty memory is how it should be anyway. However I honestly don't know if having a device showing PIO (even though there's no device attached) would drag the other devices down in speed. I would try manually selecting 'DMA if available in the dropdown box (for the PIO entry and the one that says 'DMA Mode'.

If those entries don't revert to 'DMA if available' after the reboot, we probably need to check the BIOS at bootup to see if the IDE channels are incorrectly set

    @stephen13 - here's something -
i'm still looking on google to see if having no devices attached to the 'PIO' entry will bring down speed (i guess it probably does)

Yea screw that 1.5x sucks!!!! You need to fix that. :)

Have you tried unistalling your Burner and DVD ROM (if ya have one), reboot and letting your O/S reinstall them?

and yea, what brand/type of media are you using? (please don't say princo)

Well I can't speak for all CMC MAG, but I had no problems with 4x TDK +R's and they were CMC MAG. They still play great after a year.

But yea ... I pretty much just buy Verbatims now :)

i'm sure that last comment has MADE CREAKY's DAY~!! :p

i like my Verbs very much too, but i only use the dvd+r format for my own backup purposes~ MCC003s~ i have 100 spindle of the 8x dvd-r that creaky loves, but, i prefer dvd+R format personally~ :)

me and mort are in the same boat on that one...no pun intended creaky~ :)

@flip218 - i can't believe you just said that about CMC - pls refer to 2nd link in my sig LMAO!! not really

@kivory666 - wow you wouldn't believe how hot it is already and its barely 11am. The boat is soooo warm, kids are playing outside and will have to put suncream on them soon as it's gonna be a scorcher. Just wish i had the river licence sorted out or we could have gone out in the boat for the day. I'd have escaped from afterdawn posts for a while lol. Ah well got 2 (separate) weeks off work in August, will get this boat motoring in those weeks. But bye-bye broadband for a while - woe will be me :)

@stephen13 - i found this for someone else whose DMA was being stubborn, and it worked for them (not sure if it well help you, but it's worth a try) -

    stephen13,

Try some Verbatim branded -R's. Also make sure your burners firmware is up to date.

did you uninstall your drives and rebooted?

???? ... dude stephen13 is burning at 1.5x ... it doesn't get slower than that!!!

stephen13 should be burning at 2.4x at least, 4x would be great.
