usb boot-up - would i be visible in the bios? if not where might i find it. another thing just come to mind - im looking on ebay for a *normal* external floppy drive, that would solve the problem. regards
It would be either in the BIOS or possibly as a choice in the startup screen to change Boot options. If the floppy drive is serial it should work regardless. If it is a USB then you need to make sure your laptop supports USB Bootup which if it does brings me back to the possiblity of using a Jump Drive. Here's the link on how to do it: http://searchwinsystems.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid68_gci1112731,00.html?bucket=ETA
in the bios, under advanced i can get a window headed usb emulation and there is a line *usb fdd enable*. all i can do is change it to disable. but in the boot section there is only the 3 choices, fdd,cd and hdd. so i assume that usb boot is not possible. am still looking for external floppy with serial connection. lots of usb ones
usb fdd enable means that it will emulate the floppy drive so in your boot you would change it to ffd and when it boots as long as there is a boot disc in the floppy drive it will boot from it. Another words a USB floppy drive would work for you.
Happy shopping. Found this on Ebay in your neck of the woods and is up in 18 minutes and no bids http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-External-Po...819605070QQcategoryZ31566QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
ok clifjcb i have at last got an external FDD and it works. i havent attempted to do anything as yet just in case it confuses the issue. i await your next input. regards
Good Morning Blackie Glad you were able to get a drive. The rest is easy from here. Create a folder on your desktop or someplace you can find later. Go to the following link and download the "Windwos 98 OEM" boot disk to the folder you just created. It will be a zip file. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Once you have the zip file unzip it to that folder you just created. Now copy the three unzipped files that Toshiba sent you to the boot disk folder. Now get a floppy and format it. Next copy those files (minus the 98 boot disk zip file) to your freshly formated floppy disk and you have your bootable floppy. Before you go any further either print or take note of the instructions from Toshiba on how to run the firmware flash. Now you just need to test it to make sure it boots to "A" which it should. Just take note to change you boot squence to FDD which if I remember correctly from one of your post is in the startup screens. If it works as it should then all you need to do is follow the instructions that Toshiba sent you starting from step 4. Instructions from your post 1. Make Bootable Floppy Disk 2. Extract all files of the ZIP file onto Boot Disk 3. Reboot PC with Boot Disk inserted. [bold]Start here[/bold] 4. Type: update.bat <return> F/W will now be updated (you may be prompted to insert a disk, any CD will do) 5. Wait for Flashing to finish. 6. Reboot PC When you have rebooted check drive in the Device Manager (as we discussed before in this thread) to make sure it reflects the new firmware. That should do it. Let me know how you make out.
well clifjcb - all went well with the firmware upgrade BUT it still doesnt recognise my minus rw's. beginning to suspect that a) dvd/cd writer will only play disk recorded at x1 or x2(i only have x4 at the moment), or b) try different makes of disks. im using cyberlink powerproducer which will only record at x4 and above. do you know of any freeware that would burn at x1 or 2? see message from toshiba failing that it might mena changing the dvd drive. regards and thanks
Bummer that the flash did not resolve it but all the info I did find did say that this drive is a bit finicky about the media it will work with. Yet still, all is not lost. If you do not have DVD Decrypter yet go a head and download it from here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm If you been on this site for a while you know that DVD Decrypter is a ripper not an editing program but in combo with the Cyberlink Powerproducer you should be able to get the job done. Accordingly you should be able to create your video project in Cyberlink and save it as an ISO image to your hard drive. From there you can use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO image. What is good for you is that Decrypeter will get down to the 1x write speed you need. Just make sure you use media that can support it. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Regards
hi clifjcb well it didnt go according to plan. unable to save as an iso in cyberlink powerproducer nor in nero express. so couldnt use dvd decrypter. i managed to get hold of toshiba in germany and told i need to update the ide bus master driver for the sis chipset. the sis website says contact pc maker or mobo maker. did so on thursday and am still waiting. at one stage during my experimenting i did see an option to record at x1, but at the time didnt have anything to write and lowest ive seen since then is x2 and that doesnt work. regards
At this point I would think twice before upgrading firmware on the laptop and look for other options of which I'm really not sure what is left. These are about the only suggestions I have left to offer you: 1)Instesd of using -RW discs go with just -R's since the Rom drive should handle 2x and 4x burns on them. 2)Use your PC to burn to the -RW's and record them at the slowest rate posible. As far as cyberlink power producer goes you should be able to save your project to the Hard Drive as an ISO file. This per their own instruction manuals from here: http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/guides_3_ENU.html Ver 1.0 it is on Page 38 Ver 2.0 it is on Page 40 Ver 3.0 it is on Page 47 (note: page numbers are the manual page numbers not Adobe numbering.) Now it you have an OEM version (software that came with the burner) then maybe not, but look at the instructions to see if maybe you just missed something. As for Flashing your laptop, the reason I'd shy away from this is you could cause more porblems then it is worth at this point. Plus if you deceide to go ahead and flash it I would make sure what the upgrade actually does and if you can reverse it if it does not resolve anything or creates problems you did not have before. At the very least make sure you backup any important info to a CD just in case. I'd really think about another drive or external burner/rom player at that point if you must use your laptop to burn and play DVD's. Hate to say it but I'm tapped out as far as anything else I can suggest that can help you out at this point. Wish we could have beat this one. Regards
hi clifjcb all to no avail. ive searched all over the cyberlink cd but can find no mention of iso at all. and yes it is the oem version so perhaps not available. still not heard from makers so just to prove to myself that im not going round the bend i took one of the 50+ -rw disks of films, holiday pics etc all done using my panasonic dvd writer. these were all originally on vcr tape. using the desktop i then burnt it onto a -r disk at x2 speed directly disk to disk. then i played it perfectly ok on my laptop. so it looks as though i will just have to burn them all again onto -r's and i should be ok. if i ever hear from laptop or mobo makers i will get back to you otherwise im off now to get some -r disks. thanks for your help and advice. it would be nice to fix it properly. regards
