I'm curious...I have laptops and Sony external DVD drives that r/w DVD+/- disks.

I can make copies of previously decrypted DVDs just fine with DVD-R disks but when I try to make copies of copies with DVD+R NO SALE.

The drives are capable but is it the software that Roxie and others write that will only write to DVD-R? Why do we have the dual capable drives if the software only writes to -R????

    Is it the software?

I find that odd because Sony DVD burners are generally more geared towards DVD+R than they are DVD-R. What media are you using?

Imation this weekend but the "dup" disk I'm copying from is various makers.

The DVD+Rs play fine but I think it is the software that will not let the copies of copies copy. I'm using the software that came with the external Sony drive and I also tried Roxie 7.

I also made a copy (for information only) of a copy made with DVDXtreme and the computer copied the copy and then said "there was an error in the copying" but when I played it(the new copy of a copy)...it was fine. Is this making sense.?

So difficult to talk about copies of copies of copies and make it clear!

    samintx...

I used Roxio until I switched to Nero for backing up DVD's. Roxio would often do strange things when trying to make a copy of a CD or DVD. I ended up copying the files to HD first, and then I did a regular data burn of the file.

As Sophocles points out, it may also be a media issue. I didn't know about DVD InfoPro then, but I've found this is a fine utility that will tell you if you have read errors on your source media:

Doc: I've had Nero and tried it but I am so used to Toast (mac) Roxie that my brain just navigates to it. I will try copying to disk and then backing up. I thought maybe there would be hidden files that might not copy to a HD ......I haven't tried backing up to a DVD+R because I use CDs for the few files I back up. Thanks for tip..will try..and see what happens.

What I wonder if the movie houses will change the codes.....and I do think as someone on this string mentioned the rentals(in house) have a special code attached because they do not dup in my experience.

We have a little confusion going on here. You actually posted in a forum about using a very specific type of software which is used for making backup copies of one's own original DVD movies. When I said backing up my DVD's, I meant DVD movies, not files. Anyway, I have never come across "hidden [DVD] files" that would not copy, so I don't think this is your problem.

Concerning your follow-on question, I don't quite understand what you are asking? Your first question indicates you know something about DVD's that have copy protection removed (decrypted), yet the follow-on question indicates you don't. As your question(s) look like they are going to need more than a simple answer, and they don't support the purpose of this thread, I would suggest you check out the DVD-R Shrink forum. DVD Shrink 3.2 is a freeware download from AD, there is a ton of info you can find in an AD Search, and it has guides you can google for. As a final note, if what you are asking in your last question is how to decrypt a rental movie, this is considered piracy here at AD, and it isn't condoned. However, AD will certainly help you to make a Fair Use backup of any DVD you own.

Let me state here I don't back up rental movies. When I first got my software I had rented some movies and before I thought...to try out the software I tried copying it...

I have a library of about 1200 DVD I have purchased and purchase anywhere from $5000.00 to $7000.00 per year from DiscountDVD and Amazon so I am not one of those that you describe. Last year I purchased nearly 9000.00 in DVDs...so....

I'll shut up for now...I think I'm confusing the issue. Thanks.

Don't take Doc the wrong way, he just wanted to make sure he wasn't helping you pirate movies. The searches he suggested should help clear up any problems you're having, they just don't seem to be related to this thread is all.

    @Doc:
I've noticed you've been quite the posting fool (referring to the number of posts not the content) lately. I hope the powers that be take notice and promote you soon. You've been doing a great job clearing up problems for people lately.

vurbal ... thanks for noticing, and thanks for saying something. I'm having a good time helping folks when and where I can. I'd also have to say that Sophocles has offered some pretty good mentoring which has helped with this.

    samintx...

No, I wasn't accusing you of copying rental movies. As I said, I didn't understand your last question. If you are wondering about copy protection on rental movies being different than ones you buy retail or through a club(?), I believe it to be the same within each region. I often purchase used DVD's from the video counter at my local grocery store, and I have never had a problem decrypting these and backing them up. I usually use DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink to decrypt, and then use the software that is the topic of this thread.

Vurbal is right; you are senior material pure and simple. I appreciate the vote of confidence but you’ve proven your own worth through your continued efforts.

If there’s any observers out there who can promote Doc409 I’d recommend doing it soon.

    @ vurbal and Sophocles...

I didn't know that I had made this kind of impression with you, and so I'm very pleased to hear from both of you that I have. Whatever transpires from this, its simply enough to know that my efforts have been valued and appreciated by the both of you.

Vote for yourself too because I think the same about you. You've provided some excellent assistance for DVD0RB newbis and you are clearly the stuff that seniors are made from.

    Just wondering...

Is there any way to create a menu item for the movie
    or have it desplay text.
for example instead of clicking ok on play movie
you would click ok on Play This Sh*t
    that'ill be some fusk*ng hott a$$ sh*t yo.
Or how about adding an extra scene in the movie like for example if the movie is short just have fusk*ng girls gone wild play at the end til the space of the blank gets pretty much full.
    Just a dream...

You can run the VOBs through Nero video maker and create menus. Thats the only thing I have done with DVDs that didn't have menus.
